Bears Series at Boise Tied at 1-1 After Walk-Off Loss

July 23, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL) - Yakima Bears News Release

The Yakima Bears lost 3-2 in ten innings against the Boise Hawks Friday night at Memorial Stadium in Boise, Idaho. The game marked the fourth time the Bears had played extra innings against the Hawks in Boise, with the Hawks winning all four times.

After falling behind in the third inning 1-0, the Bears tied the game in fifth with an RBI-single by Marc Bourgeois that scored Jimmy Comerota.

The Hawks took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bears tied the game in the seventh on a single from Garrett Weber that plated Bourgeois.

Both team had chances at the end of the game. The Bears stranded a runner at third in both the eighth and tenth innings, while the Hawks left the bases loaded in the ninth.

Boise got the win in the bottom of the tenth with a manufactured run. Zeke DeVoss reached on a drag bunt, moved to second on a wild pitch, and then stole third. While DeVoss was moving around the bases, Mike Blake recorded two strikeouts, but a single up the middle by Rafael Lopez allowed the winning run to cross.

Blake took the loss, falling to 2-4 on the season. Before Blake, the bullpen had combined for four shutout innings. Drew Zininia allowed no hits in two innings, while Miles Reagan and Greg Robinson each tossed a scoreless frame.

Both starters looked strong, but neither factored into the decision. John Pedrotty of the Bears allowed two runs in a season-long five innings. Willengton Cruz of the Hawks had a quality start, allowing only one run in six innings.

The Bears outhit the Hawks 10-8 and Yakima played error-free baseball, while the Hawks were charged with one error. Comerota and Bourgeois both went 2-for-4 in the loss. Zach Jones went 1-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 12-straight games, which is the longest streak in the Northwest League this season.

The Bears are now 12-23 this season and the series in Boise is tied at 1-1. First pitch in the series finale between the Bears and Hawks is scheduled for 6:15 pacific time Saturday. Both teams are expected to start right-handed pitchers Saturday, with Brad Wilson going for the Bears and Ben Wells going for the Hawks.
