Boise Hawks News Release
BOISE, Idaho - Rafael Lopez lined a two-out walk-off RBI single through the middle in the bottom of the tenth inning, lifting the Boise Hawks to a 3-2 victory over the Yakima Bears, before a sellout crowd of 3,452 fans at Memorial Stadium
The win for the Hawks ended a six-game losing streak and improved the team to 5-0 in extra innings this season - including four wins over the Bears.
Zeke DeVoss led off the tenth with a bunt single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and stole third. On a 1-2 pitch, Lopez roped a 1-2 curveball just past hurler Mike Blake, into centerfield, to plate the winning run.
Boise got on the board first in the third, as Willson Contreras led off with a triple, scoring on a wild pitch - ending a Hawks 23 and two-thirds of an inning scoreless streak at home. The Bears would tie the game in the top of the fifth on a Mark Burgeois RBI double, but an RBI fielders' choice by Reggie Golden in the bottom of the inning, gave the Hawks a 2-1.
Yakima would knot the score at 2-2 in the seventh on a single to right by Garrett Weber and had a runner at second with one out in the eighth, but Bryce Shafer got the final two outs to get out of the jam.
The Hawks would load the bases in the ninth with two outs, but Greg Robinson struck out Contreras to send the game to extras. Yakima got a runner to third with one out in the tenth, but Shafer fanned Tyler Bream and Zach Jones to end the threat.
Shafer got the win, striking out four in his longest outing of the season. Willengton Cruz was solid for the Hawks, going six innings of one-run ball in a no-decision. Lopez, DeVoss, and Yaniel Cabezas each had two hits in the win.
Burgeois and Jimmy Comerota each had two hits for Yakima in the loss, as the Bears fell to 2-6 in extra inning games this season.
The rubber game of the three-game series is tomorrow night, as the Hawks send Ben Wells to the mound, opposite Brad Wilson, at 7:15 p.m.
