Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk used a strong outing from Eddie Gamboa and a late rally in game two to sweep the Gwinnett Braves in a doubleheader Monday night at Harbor Park. The Tides won game one, 4-1, before rallying to edge Gwinnett 2-1 in game two.
In game one, Gamboa (1-2) completely baffled the Braves with his knuckleball, yielding just two hits and a walk in a 4-1 complete game win. Gamboa, who had a 7.58 ERA over his first four starts with Norfolk after being promoted from Double-A Bowie, threw 61 of his 85 pitches for strikes while facing just three batters over the minimum. The only run he allowed came in the fourth inning, as Taylor Pastornicky led off the frame with a walk and moved to third on an errant pickoff throw before scoring on a passed ball.
The Tides gave Gamboa all the support he would need in the first frame, as Eric Thames belted a two-out, two-run home run in the first inning off of Cody Martin (2-3). It was the only hit allowed over five innings for Martin, who retired the final 13 batters he faced.
Norfolk extended its lead to 4-1 in the sixth frame on a two-run home run by Yamaico Navarro. It was the eighth home run of the season for Navarro, with three of those coming over the last four days.
In the nightcap, Gwinnett took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Stefan Gartrell, but Norfolk used four straight sixth inning singles to rally for a 2-1 win.
The Tides had just three hits against Braves starter Joe Bisenius (3-5) entering the sixth frame before each of Norfolk's first four hitters reached base. Chris Dickerson started the rally with a single to center, and Navarro followed with a single to right to put runners at the corners. Jason Pridie followed with a single to knot the score at 1-1, and Eric Thames plated Navarro with a single of his own to give the Tides a 2-1 lead.
Mike Belfiore (2-1) earned the victory with three innings of relief, while Jairo Asencio worked a scoreless seventh to earn his league-leading 21st save. Asencio now has 13 consecutive scoreless appearances, and his 21 saves are tied with Mark Worrell for the fourth-most in a single season in Tides franchise history.
With the sweep, Norfolk pulled within a half-game of Pawtucket in the IL Wild Card standings.
Norfolk and Gwinnett will continue their five-game, four-day series Tuesday night at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 7:05. Tsuyoshi Wada (3-5, 5.02) will get the start for Norfolk against right-hander David Hale (6-5, 2.99).
Notes: Gamboa's complete game was Norfolk's third of 2013, joining previous seven-inning efforts from Jake Arrieta and Jair Jurrjens...Norfolk did not leave a runner on base in the game one win... In the opener, Norfolk wore camouflage uniforms and commemorative hats honoring the crew of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, 700 of whom were in attendance for the twinbill... Norfolk's team ERA over the last seven games is 1.25 (9-ER, 65.0-IP)....Jordan Schafer, rehabbing an injured ankle for Gwinnett, went 0-for-7 in the doubleheader...Steve Clevenger made his first appearance in a Norfolk uniform, going 0-for-3 in game two.
