Norfolk Admirals News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - Max Sauve scored a goal and an assist, including the game winner at 5:45 into the third period to lead the Norfolk Admirals (5-1-0-2, 12pts) to a 2-1 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the Mohegan Sun Arena Saturday evening. The Admirals hand the Penguins (6-1-0-1,13pts) their first regulation loss of the season.
The Penguins jumped out a 1-0 lead on Brian Gibbons's team leading fifth goal of the season. Gibbons took off down the ice on a breakaway and beat Admirals goaltender John Gibson five-hole with a wrist shot for the goal.
Norfolk knotted the game at one on the power play at 18:53 of the opening frame. Rickard Rakell fired a shot on goal from the right wing circle which was stopped by Penguins goaltender Peter Mannino. However, the rebound bounced back in front of the crease causing a wild scramble for the puck. Rakell picked up his own rebound and backhanded the puck into the net for the tying goal. The goal was Rakell's team leading fourth of the season. The first period ended with both teams locked at one.
A physical second period featured a pair of fights involving former Norfolk forward Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond who now plays for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Leblond battled Norfolk's Zach Stortini and John Kurtz. While both teams exchange punches, they also exchanged scoring chances in the second period, but both goaltenders came up with all of the necessary stops to keep the score tied at one after 40 minutes played.
Nearly six minutes into the third, Norfolk found success again by crashing the net. Another scramble in front of Mannino resulted in the second goal in as many nights for Max Sauve. Sauve jabbed at a loose puck at the top of the crease and beat Mannino for the goal to give the Admirals their first lead of the game.
For the remainder of the third, both teams traded off power play opportunities, but neither team could find the back of the net. Gibson stopped all 11 shots faced in the final period of regulation to preserve the 2-1 Norfolk victory.
Gibson earns the win stopping 26 of 27 shots, while Mannino takes the loss allowing two goals on 24 shots faced in the contest.
