Heeter Leads Phantoms to Victory

Cal Heeter turned in a 35-save performance on 36 shots to lead the Adirondack Phantoms to a 3-1 victory at the Binghamton Senators on Saturday night. Brandon Alderson (2nd), Kyle Flanagan (1st) and Jason Akeson (1st) all lit the lamp in the win.
Heeter was pressed especially hard in the second period facing an 18-shot barrage from all angles. He turned aside every one. He made a couple terrific saves in the closing minutes of the period when it appeared Binghamton to help Adirondack barely preserve their 2-1 lead at the time. Just as it appeared the Senators were very much on the verge of equalizing, Chris VandeVelde swept one out of harm's way and then Kris Newbury pushed his way into the Binghamton zone and somehow battled through a Binghamton defenseman on him. Newbury's shot was kicked down by rookie goalie Andrew Hammond but Jason Akeson trailing on the play was right there for the rebound and the key goal to give Adirondack a little more breathing room at 3-1.
For Newbury in his 601st AHL game all-time and just his second game with the Phantoms, it was is first career point wearing an Adirondack jersey. Akeson's first goal of the year came a little later than perhaps was expected from the third-year pro who has led the Phantoms in scoring for each of the past two seasons.
Chris Wideman's slapshot from center-point on the power play midway through the first period snuck past Heeter's right skate and went in untouched to give Binghamton the initial 1-0 advantage. But it just took 1:09 after that goal for Adirondack to strike as they took advantage of a strong cycle in the zone and finally Brandon Alderson found himself with the puck looking at a wide-open net while the goalie Hammond was down after an initial stop. Alderson fading towards the right circle made it look easy as he flipped the biscuit top-shelf for his second goal of the season.
Later in the second period, Kyle Flanagan was right there to deposit his first of the year and second as a pro after Marcel Noebels was strong on the boards helping win it away. Matt Mangene also assisted.
Then came the wild second period which was scramble-city for the Phantoms at times. Binghamton was generating big chances and the Phantoms were having difficulty generating any pressure back on the Senators' side. But Cal Heeter was able to slam the door every time.
A drive early in the second period fro Binghamton was blasted off the crossbar. An apparent goal early in the third period by David Dziurzynski that would have made the score 3-2 was waved off by a quick whistle. The lucky break came due to Adirondack's own penalty on Matt Mangene. An initial shot on the delayed penalty was turned aside by Cal Heeter and even though the goalie never really had possession, the whistle blowing just an instant before the goal was scored would prove to benefit the Phantoms and they kept their two-goal advantage.
Adirondack improved to 2-4-2 with the victory while Binghamton falls to 5-3-0. The Phantoms and Senators will have a rematch in the middle of Adirondack's upcoming three-game homestand back in Glens Falls.

Next week, the Phantoms have three home games in four days. Adirondack hosts Springfield on Wednesday night with a Costume Parade On Ice. All fans dressed in costume are invited to join the between-periods parade fronted by our fearless leader, Dax. Friday night, Adirondack hosts Binghamton on Military Appreciation Night. Special commemorative military-style Phantoms-logo pucks will be sold at the game to benefit local military organizations.
