Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Maxime Sauve registered an assist and the decisive marker for the Norfolk Admirals as they sank the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins by a score of 2-1 at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. It was the first regulation loss of the season for the Penguins, who saw their seven-game point streak to start the season come to an end.
Only three minutes into the game, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton forward Brian Gibbons got behind the Admirals defense and gathered up a home run pass from teammate Simon Despres. With a quick move of the stick, Gibbons slid the puck through the five-hole of Norfolk's goalie John Gibson. This would prove to be the only blemish on Gibson's ledger in the contest.
The score remained at 1-0 until the closing minutes of the first period as Norfolk tied the game up with 1:07 left until the intermission when Rickard Rakell banged in a power play goal.
After a scoreless second period, the Norfolk Admirals would find the game-winner at 5:45 of the third. During a scrum in front of the Penguins net, Sauve slipped the puck through the pads of Penguins netminder Peter Mannino, giving Norfolk the 2-1 lead.
Norfolk took a late four minute high-sticking penalty, giving Wilkes-Barre/Scranton an opportunity to even the match in the waning moments. Despite a late flurry of chances by the Penguins, Norfolk was able to hang on to grab the win.
In his second start of the season, Mannino took the loss with 22 saves on 24 shots. Gibson finished with 26 stops to record his second straight victory.
The Pens will faceoff with the Hershey Bears at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on Friday, Nov. 1, at 7:05 PM. Tune into the SportsHub 102 or on AHL Live.
