St. John's IceCaps News Release

The St. John's IceCaps staged a spirited comeback but dropped a 5-3 decision to the Manchester Monarchs Saturday afternoon at the Verizon Wireless Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Manchester fired four unanswered goals on 10 shots in the second. Nick Shore collected his first professional goal at 1:37 of the middle frame, beating IceCaps netminder Jussi Olkinuora five-hole. The Monarchs then scored three times in a six-minute stretch, starting at the 8:18 mark. Tyler Toffoli scored twice, including a powerplay marker, while Linden Vey added another on the man advantage to give the Monarchs a 4-0 lead.

However, the IceCaps roared back in the third period, starting with a gorgeous wrap-around goal by defenceman Brenden Kichton at the 1:59 mark. Blair Riley and John Albert were awarded assists. A minute-and-a-half later, Andrew Gordon deflected a shot past Manchester netminder Martin Jones. Hometown product Ian O'Connor picked up the assist on Gordon's goal for his first-ever AHL helper. However with only two minutes and 13 seconds remaining in the contest, Tanner Pearson converted on a breakaway to seal the IceCaps' fate.
