Amarillo Gorillas News Release

Amarillo, TX - David Nimmo and Bill Vandermeer each scored six points in the Gorillas 7-2 victory over the New Mexico Scorpions on Saturday night in front of a capacity crowd (4,912) at the Amarillo Civic Center. The victory gave Amarillo seven wins in their last eight games. The Gorillas got their fifth win of the season over New Mexico, and have beaten their division rival in five out of their past six meetings. Amarillo was efficient on the power-play going 4-9 with the man advantage, while holding the Scorpions to 0-9. They also out-shot New Mexico by a final tally of 42-31.

Three goals late in the first period from Marcus Reszka, Vandermeer and Nimmo would put the Gorillas on top 3-0 heading into the second frame, and another goal from Vandermeer early in the second gave the Gorillas a 4-0 lead. Konrad Reeder would score the first Scorpions goal at 6:56 of the second, but Nimmo would quickly regain the four goal lead with a tally at 8:43 of the middle frame. Reeder would answer right back for the Scorpions, again pulling New Mexico to within three, but that is as close as they would get.

The third period belonged to the Gorillas, as it has all season long, with Amarillo getting two more tallies from Austin Sutter, and Nimmo's third of the game to quell any Scorpions comeback attempt. The Gorillas were called for a season high 45 penalty minutes, as the game included three fights as Chad Grisdale dropped the gloves, and Vandermeer had two scraps to go along with his six points.

Dan McWhinney earned his thirteenth win of the season, and has gone 7-2-0 over his current streak of nine consecutive starts. He turned aside 29 of the 31 shots he saw, earning the third star of the game. The Gorillas will be back in action tomorrow night against the Texas Brahmas at the Amarillo Civic Center - game time is set for 6:05 PM and tickets can still be purchased by visiting the Gorillas office at 1934 Civic Circle, or visiting www.panhandletickets.com.
