Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
AUSTIN, TX - John DeCaro broke the All-time CHL record with his ninth shutout of the season as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs defeated the Austin Ice Bats 3-0 at Chaparral Ice Center. Tyrel Lucas' second period powerplay goal was the game-winner and Joe Ori added another powerplay marker in the third prior to an empty netter that sealed the victory on Saturday night.
The Mudbugs came out playing well in the first period with a handful of good scoring chances, but Austin goaltender Miguel Beaudry kept the âBugs off the scoreboard. Beaudry stopped 14 shots in all in the first period as Bossier-Shreveport outshot Austin 14-5. Both teams were 0-2 on the powerplay in the opening period, which ended scoreless.
Early in the second period, Bossier-Shreveport took the lead on Lucas' 12th powerplay goal of the season. The âBugs moved the puck nicely on the powerplay from Ryan Fairbarn to Daniel Pegoraro to Lucas, who tucked the puck in behind Beaudry to make it 1-0. Austin had three powerplays in the second period, but couldn't convert as Bossier-Shreveport carried the one-goal margin into the third.
Austin had two more man-advantages in the final period, but again was thwarted by a Mudbugs defensive corps playing with just four defensemen in the game. Another powerplay goal with under three minutes remaining gave the âBugs some room to breath, as Elias Godoy juked an Ice Bat at the blue line and got the puck to Pegoraro, who fed Ori. Ori waited for Beaudry to commit and then scored to give the Mudbugs a 2-0 lead. Kevin Cooper's empty net goal salted away the victory and made Bossier-Shreveport the only team in the CHL with five 20-goal scorers this season.
DeCaro made 20 saves in the record-setting shutout as the Mudbugs outshot Austin 34-20. The âBugs scored multiple powerplay goals for the second straight night, finishing 2 for 8 with the man advantage. Bossier-Shreveport's penalty killers were also perfect again, as the Ice Bats went 0 for 8 powerplay chances.
Both teams will now load the busses and head back to Bossier City for an afternoon affair on Sunday at the CenturyTel Center . The final regular season meeting between Bossier-Shreveport and Austin is slated to start at 4:05 pm and will also be the Mudbugs' annual "Pooch Party" game, where fans can bring dogs with them to CenturyTel Center and get $9.00 discounted tickets. Tickets are available for the last Sunday afternoon Mudbugs home game this season. Call Ticketmaster at 318-741-9700 for individual tickets or the Mudbugs office at 318-752-BUGS for group seats.
