Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Jacksonville Suns starting left-handed pitcher Justin Nicolino has been named the Miami Marlins Minor League Pitcher of the Month for June, announced by the organization on Thursday.
During the month Nicolino was a dominant 3-0 with a 2.65 ERA in five starts. Also during the month he struck out 16 batters while issuing only one walk.
The 2014 Southern League All-Star was nothing short of brilliant in his June 21st start against the Birmingham Barons at Bragan Field; throwing a nine-inning complete game shutout en route to a 6-0 Suns win. In his outing, he'd scatter five hits, strike out four Barons and not issue a single walk. In his start, he tossed a season-high 102 pitchers, 71 of them for strikes.
Overall this season, Nicolino is 7-2 with a 3.16 ERA in 17 starts, and he hasn't suffered a loss since April 12. Nicolino features the 10th best ERA in the Southern League (3.16), is second in the league in innings pitched (102.2), has the second lowest WHIP (1.06), and leads the league by issuing the fewest walks per nine innings of any pitcher: 0.96.
This is the second Marlins Minor League Pitcher of the Month honor for Nicolino, who won the award for May 2013. In that month with the Jupiter Hammerheads, Nicolino was 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA in six starts, on his way to earning Florida State League Pitcher of the Year honors.
Nicolino was originally selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the second round of the 2010 draft out of University High School in Orlando, Florida. He was acquired by the Marlins organization following the 2012 season in a 12-player trade with the Blue Jays. He is listed by Baseball America as the fourth-best prospect in the Marlins organization.
Tonight the Suns will send out right-hander Jose Urena (6-6, 4.33) while the Wahoos will counter with a right-hander of their own in Ben Lively (0-1, 2.89).
Suns fans can listen to Thursday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or throughwww.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 7:15 p.m. ET with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show.
