Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla.-The Pensacola Blue Wahoos, in conjunction with Minor League Baseball Charities(tm), announced today that they will donate $10,000 to 90Works, a local non-profit providing relief assistance to flood victims in Northwest Florida. Blue Wahoos fans determined the beneficiary of the donation, with 90Works capturing nearly 50 percent of the in-game fan votes.
90Works helps tackle homelessness, poverty and family violence in the Pensacola community. The organization plans to use the donation to help families affected by the storms in late April. Funds will be used to find homes for displaced families and help them acquire insurance to prepare for any future disasters. Additionally, monies will be used to assist clients in finding work and cover their rent and utilities while securing employment.
"90Works is thrilled that fans selected us to distribute the very generous $10,000 from MiLB Charities and the Blue Wahoos for flood victims in Northwest Florida," said Cate Jordan, 90Works Executive Director. "90Works will use our housing first social work model to help people regain self-sufficiency and stability. The $10,000 will be used for Temporary Financial Assistance to pay for homeless prevention and rapid rehousing costs such as rent/utility arrears, moving costs and utility and rent deposits. Recipients of the support must voluntarily agree to participate in a 90-day case management program to ensure that success and stability is achieved. 90Works has a 90 percent success rate helping people get self-sufficient in 90 days."
The Blue Wahoos will honor 90Works with a check presentation at the Blue Wahoos Family Fun Day on Friday, July 4 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium before the Sertoma Club fireworks. The ceremony will take place at approximately 8:30 p.m. following The Lego Movie viewing on the video board. Jordan will accept the check on behalf of the non-profit group.
Through team fundraisers, auctions and the MiLB Charities donation, approximately $20,000 has been contributed to assist flood victims in greater Pensacola.
