Jackson Generals News Release
JACKSON, TN - The Generals (4-11/35-49) used a three-run eighth to tie Thursday's game at 3-3 with the Mobile BayBears (9-6/35-49), but Mobile scored the winning run in the ninth and took the series finale 4-3 in Jackson. The Generals played in front of 5,562 fans on Thursday night which closed the homestand at 22,695. Jackson closed the homestand 2-8.
Matt Anderson (ND, 3-3, 4.37) pitched well enough to win on most nights, going eight innings and surrendering just three runs on eight hits, but his counterpart did him one better. A.J. Schugel (4-1, 3.81) was perfect through 5.2 innings and finished his outing allowing just three runs on four hits in seven innings.
The BayBears scored first in the third inning. Evan Marzilli doubled with one out and Nate Samson and Tom Belza followed with singles. Marzilli scored on Belza's base hit and the lead was 1-0 at that point.
Mobile plated another run in the sixth as Jake Lamb led off with a single, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a double by Mark Thomas. Another run scored for the BayBears as Jake Lamb hit his 12th home run of the year in the eighth to increase the Mobile lead to 3-0.
The Generals bats exploded in the eighth as Pat Kivlehan (1x3, R, HR, RBI) led off with his 5th long ball in a Jackson uniform this season. Dan Paolini (1x3, R) followed with a single and then came around to score on John Hicks's (1x3, R, 3B, RBI) second triple of the season to cut the BayBears lead to 3-2. Jack Marter (0-0, RBI) had a pinch hit sacrifice fly to center that scored Hicks and tied the score at 3-3.
The effort was valiant, but was not enough as Mobile loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth and Ryan Court scored the game-winning run as Gerson Montialla scored on a fielder's choice.
Both starters pitched well, but neither received a decision as the game was tied in the eighth. Patrick Schuster (3-2, 2.03) earned the win for Mobile as Kaleb Fleck picked up his ninth save. Stephen Shackleford (5-2, 3.65) suffered the loss for Jackson as he allowed the ninth inning run to score.
No General had a multi-hit game, but maybe the biggest hit before the eighth inning came from Brock Hebert (1x3). With two out in the sixth, starter Schugel had been perfect through 5.2 innings. Not only did Hebert break up the perfect game, but he earned his first Double-A base hit on a single through the right side of the infield.
The Generals travel to Huntsville, Ala. to begin a series with the Huntsville Stars Friday at Joe Davis Stadium. Jackson will look to have Tyler Olson (3-4, 4.13) on the mound as Jacob Barnes (1-3, 5.09) will get the start for the Stars. The Independence Day game will begin at 6:30 p.m. and can be heard on 96.5 ESPN, TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
