New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Revolution will travel to face New York City FC in the 2022 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on Wednesday, May 25 for a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff at St John's University's Belson Stadium in Jamaica, N.Y. All U.S. Open Cup contests stream nationally on ESPN+. Click here for a full tournament schedule and bracket.
This will mark the first U.S. Open Cup meeting between the Revolution and New York City FC and the first matchup between the two teams since last year's Eastern Conference Semifinal on Nov. 30. New England holds a 9-7-4 advantage in MLS competition against the defending MLS Cup champions. The Round of 16 match will be the first visit to Belson Stadium for New England since a 2016 U.S. Open Cup Fifth Round match against the New York Cosmos, a 3-2 victory for the Revolution.
Should New England advance, it will face the winner of the other Northeast Group matchup between Charlotte FC and the New York Red Bulls in the Quarterfinals, to be held from June 21-22. New England advanced to the Round of 16 following an emphatic 5-1 victory over FC Cincinnati on May 11 in the Round of 32. Carles Gil claimed New England's first Open Cup hat trick in club history while Adam Buksa bagged a brace, marking the first time two Revolution players recorded multi-goal games in the same U.S. Open Cup match in over 20 years.
The New England Revolution are three-time finalists and one-time winners of the U.S. Open Cup, having lifted the trophy in 2007. Overall, the Revolution are 22-17-5 in 44 games in the competition, including a 9-12-1 mark against MLS opponents.
Dating back to 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest club tournaments in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a single-elimination tournament. The winner of the U.S. Open Cup receives a bid to the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, an annual tournament between the top clubs from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Concacaf Champions League's winner is awarded a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Revolution continue the MLS season this weekend with a visit to Atlanta United FC at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday, May 15. The match kicks off at 1:30 p.m. ET and airs nationally on ESPN and ESPN Deportes and can be heard locally on 98.5 The Sports Hub and 1260 AM Nossa Radio in Portuguese.
