Austin FC Announces Multi-Year Contract Extension for Head Coach Josh Wolff
May 13, 2022 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Austin FC News Release
Austin, TEXAS - Austin FC announced today that Head Coach Josh Wolff has signed a three-year contract extension with the Club, continuing as Head Coach of the Verde & Black through the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. Through the Club's first 10 regular season matches, Wolff has ATXFC currently positioned at second overall in the Western Conference and second overall in the Supporters' Shield standings and a 6-2-2 record.
"On behalf of the Austin FC ownership group and our entire organization, we're very pleased to announce Josh's contract extension today," said Austin FC CEO and Majority Owner Anthony Precourt. "We are extremely fortunate to have such a highly respected and highly talented coach lead our coaching staff, and we're both grateful and appreciative for all of the work he puts in to representing Austin in the best way possible."
Wolff, 45, signed as Austin FC's first-ever Head Coach in November 2019. The Club hired him from the USMNT staff, where he was an assistant coach under Gregg Berhalter and played a role in the team's run to the final of the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup. Previously, Wolff was an assistant on Berhalter's staff for five (5) seasons with the Columbus Crew. Wolff's first coaching role was with D.C. United as an assistant coach in 2013, helping the club win the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup that season.
"Josh is a young and very talented coach who we trust to lead this Club on the field moving forward," said Austin FC Sporting Director Claudio Reyna. "The style of play and work ethic he has implemented, and his mentorship of our players has created a really strong culture around our Club and led to an incredible amount of growth in a short period of time. We're thrilled to see what he's capable of in the coming years. Our future is bright."
During his playing career, Wolff represented the United States at both the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups, recording an assist in the USMNT's famous 2-0 win over Mexico in the 2002 Round of 16. He scored nine (9) goals in 52 appearances during his international career, was named U.S. Soccer's Young Male Athlete of the Year in 1998 and was a U.S. Olympic team athlete at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.
"I'm very grateful to Anthony, the Austin FC ownership group and Claudio for their continued faith and confidence," said Wolff. "This is still a young, growing Club but seeing our vision for Austin FC come to life on and off the field has been one of the great honors of my career. My staff and I will keep working every day to represent the city, and to develop our team both competitively and as human beings. The best is yet to come."
At the club level, Wolff played 14 seasons with three (3) teams in Major League Soccer in addition to one (1) season in Germany with 1860 Munich. In total, Wolff made 367 appearances for his club sides, scoring 106 goals and earning MLS All Star selections in 2002 and 2006. He won the 1998 MLS Cup with Chicago Fire FC, and won the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 1998, 2000 and 2004.
