Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - The Northwest Arkansas Naturals came from behind with a six-run rally in the top of the ninth to claim the 7-2 win against the Springfield Cardinals before 4,802 fans at Hammons Field on Friday night. The game was delayed for one hour and 23 minutes in the top of the sixth due to storms.

The Cardinals (15-13, 45-53) jumped in front right away, striking against RHP Luke Farrell in the bottom of the first inning. CF Charlie Tilson extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a leadoff single to start the frame. Tilson swiped his league-leading 33rd steal of the year to take second base, but Farrell battled back with two straight outs. However, 1B Jonathan Rodriguez came through with a two-out RBI single lined to left field, bringing in Tilson from second for the 1-0 lead for Springfield.

RHP Andrew Morales kept the narrow advantage intact through his first three scoreless stanzas, before Springfield doubled the lead in the bottom of the third. With two down, 3B Patrick Wisdom extended the inning with a double ripped into the left field corner. LF Anthony Garcia followed with a sharp single to left, plating Wisdom from second to make it a 2-0 Cardinals lead.

Morales continued to stifle the Naturals (10-17, 50-47) bats through the fifth, before Northwest Arkansas attempted to rally in the top of the sixth. Three straight singles from 2B Gabriel Noriega, SS Raul Mondesi and CF Bubba Starling loaded the bases with no outs. With 3B Hunter Dozier at the plate, the umpires were forced to call for the tarp and send the game into a rain delay. After a delay of one hour and 23 minutes, RHP Corey Baker took over on the mound and inherited the three Naturals runners. Baker, though, rattled off three straight outs with a pair of strikeouts around an infield pop out, ushering the Cardinals out of the jam unscathed to keep it a 2-0 lead for Springfield.

Naturals RHP Aroni Nina took over for the bottom of the sixth and posted a scoreless inning, before Northwest Arkansas got on the board in the top of the seventh. After RF Lane Adams singled to start the inning, Baker struck out DH Frank Schwindel for the first out. However, C Parker Morin and Noriega reached on consecutive singles, loading the bases with only one down. SS Raul Mondesi skied an RBI sacrifice fly to right field, enabling Adams to tag and score the first Northwest Arkansas run. Baker, though, came back with a strikeout of CF Bubba Starling, ending the inning with Springfield hanging on to the 2-1 lead.

RHP Ronnie Shaban (L, 2-2) kept the Cardinals in front with a 1-2-3 top of the eighth, but the Naturals came roaring back with six runs in the top of the ninth. Adams started the stanza with the tying shot, a solo home run to center field. Schwindel followed the homer with a double to right-center, before racing home on an RBI double by Morin, who took third base on a fielding error by RF David Washington. With RHP Chris Thomas taking over on the mound, Noriega pulled an RBI double to left field, plating Morin from third base. Thomas dug in with a fly out and a strikeout, but then 3B Hunter Dozier knocked an RBI double to score the fourth run of the frame. After an RBI base hit by 1B Alex Liddi, LF Jorge Bonifacio capped the rally with an RBI triple to make it a 7-2 lead for the Naturals.

With RHP Kyle Zimmer (W, 1-0) on the mound in the bottom of the ninth, SS Aledmys Diaz ripped a one-out single to reach base. After the single, Zimmer gave way to RHP Benino Pruneda, Jr., who retired the next two batters in order to close the 7-2 win for Northwest Arkansas.
