Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - The Springfield Cardinals scored 11 runs in the fifth and sixth innings, blowing past the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, 12-4, before 5,643 fans at Hammons Field on Saturday evening.

After Cardinals top prospect, RHP Alex Reyes, struck out the side in the top of the third, his third straight scoreless frame, the Cardinals (16-13, 46-53) dealt the first blow in the bottom of the third. Facing Kansas City Royals prospect, LHP Sean Manaea, 1B David Washington led off the bottom of the third with a solo home run to left field, swinging Springfield into the 1-0 advantage.

The Naturals (10-18, 50-48), though, battled right back in the top of the fourth inning. SS Raul Mondesi worked a walk to start the inning, before taking second on a balk. Reyes responded with his fifth strikeout of the game, but LF Jorge Bonifacio squared the score with an RBI double to left field, tying the game at 1-1.

Springfield LHP Kyle Hald (W, 3-4) took over on the mound to start the top of the fifth and dealt a quick 1-2-3 inning to keep it tied, before the Cardinals charged back in front in the bottom of the fifth. Facing LHP Sam Selman (L, 3-4), 2B Breyvic Valera worked a walk to start the inning. CF Charlie Tilson then ripped a single to left-center, extending his hitting streak to 17 games and putting two runners on. After an infield single from LF Mike O'Neill loaded the bases, 3B Patrick Wisdom punched an RBI single past third base to score Valera and lift Springfield back in front. RF Anthony Garcia stepped in next and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, earning an RBI and forcing in Tilson for the 3-1 advantage. RHP Matt Murray took over on the mound and dealt a strikeout for the first out of the inning. 2B Bruce Caldwell, though, ripped a two-run single to center field, which then led to a throwing error and a third run coming home on the play, lifting the Cardinals into the 6-1 lead.

Springfield then blew the game open with six more runs in the bottom of the sixth. With two away, O'Neill extended the inning by reaching on a fielding error at short. Wisdom then crushed a two-run home run to left field, his team-leading 12th of the year, opening it to an 8-1 advantage. Garcia and Ohlman followed the blast with back-to-back singles, followed by an RBI double from Caldwell. With two on and two down, SS Matt Williams belted a three-run blast to left field, capping the charge with the Cardinals in front, 12-1.

The Naturals refused to go down without a fight, chipping away at the deficit in the top of the eighth inning. With one down, DH Kenny Diekroeger worked a free pass, before a bunt single from 2B Ramon Torres. A base hit by Mondesi loaded the bases with one away for 3B Hunter Dozier. Dozier chopped into an RBI fielder's choice that brought in Diekroeger and left runners at the corners. Bonifacio then followed with an RBI double, followed by an RBI single from CF Bubba Starling to decrease the Naturals deficit to 12-4.

Cardinals LHP Ryan Sherriff, who had retired the final out in the top of the eighth, slammed the door with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, closing the 12-4 win for the Cardinals.
