Nailers Win Donatelli's Debut in Trenton
December 7, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
TRENTON, NJ- On Wednesday night, Clark Donatelli made his debut as the Wheeling Nailers' head coach, and his team answered with a solid effort on the ice. Patrick Killeen made 35 saves, and three different Nailers lit the lamp, as Wheeling picked up a 3-1 win over the Trenton Titans in front of 1,555 fans at Sun National Bank Center.
The Nailers opened the scoring with 6:42 remaining in the first period, building off of a power play in which they were able to generate some pressure in the Trenton zone. Scooter Vaughan took a pass from Cody Chupp, and skated in on the left side of the offensive zone. He then slipped a pass through the slot to Zack Torquato, who flipped in a shot from the bottom of the right circle.
Midway through the second period, Wheeling added to the lead. Zack Torquato turned a wrist shot on goal from the right circle that was stopped, but bobbled into the slot by goaltender Dave Caruso. Mickael Bedard took advantage of the opportunity, slipping a backhander through Caruso for a 2-0 advantage. Cody Chupp also assisted on Bedard's tally, giving him two points in the game.
The score remained that way until the final minutes of regulation. With 1:04 remaining, the Titans foiled Wheeling's shutout bid, as Jean-Sebastien Berube fed Randy Rowe from behind the net. Rowe took a shot from the top of the crease that snuck through, bringing the home team within one. 22 seconds later, Chris Barton destroyed Trenton's hope of a comeback, as he nailed an empty net from inside of his own blueline, giving him his 15th goal of the season, and giving the Nailers a 3-1 victory.
Patrick Killeen had one of his best games of the season for Wheeling, stopping 35 of 36 shots in the win. Dave Caruso made 31 saves on 33 shots in a losing effort for Trenton.
The Nailers return to WesBanco Arena on Friday night to battle the Reading Royals. Face-off is set for 7:35PM. Friday night will feature $1 draft beer and the inaugural Nailers Wing Fest. Fans will be able to sample local vendor's wings and help select a grand champion.
