Idaho Suffers Frustrating Setback

December 7, 2011 - ECHL (ECHL)
Idaho Steelheads News Release

(Boise, ID) - A bad bounce off the glass at CenturyLink Arena turned the tide of a hockey game Wednesday night as the Colorado Eagles rallied past the Idaho Steelheads, 4-2.

The Steelheads had jumped out to a two-goal lead midway through the first period to gain control. Chad Nehring stuffed a backhand between Andrew Penner's leg pads to give Idaho the early lead and then Kael Mouillierat cleaned up a Chris Hepp point shot to give the Steelheads a 2-0 lead halfway through the first period. It was Mouillierat's team-leading tenth goal of the season and Hepp's first assist of the campaign.

Ninety seconds later, Colorado had the puck on the left-hand side of the ice near the center line. Defenseman Jon Landry wound up to dump the puck into the Idaho zone. Idaho goaltender Jerry Kuhn left the crease to play the puck as it rimmed around the wall. However, the puck caught the glass funny near the half-wall, taking a wild carom straight into the vacated Steelhead net behind Kuhn.

That goal seemed to stem all of Idaho's momentum. Colorado tied the game up late in the first period when Riley Nelson cashed in on a two-on-one, going top corner to beat Kuhn and make it a 2-2 game after one period. The Eagles took the lead early in the second on the power play when Patrick Cey redirected an Aaron Schneekloth shot from the blue line past Kuhn to give Colorado a 3-2 lead.

Idaho had chances to tie the game in the second, including a pair of painfully close misses by Mouillierat near the crease. Once, he had Penner beaten cleanly but his shot skimmed just inches wide of the far post.

Colorado added a fourth goal in the third period on another two-on-one rush, this time Chad Costello extended his point streak to eleven straight games with a nice feed to Jack Combs for his 17th goal of the season.

Kuhn was again tested in net for Idaho, particularly in the third period when Colorado spent nearly half the period (eight minutes) on the power play. He turned aside 44 of 48 shots - including 26 of 27 in the third period - in the loss for Idaho. Andrew Penner stopped 24 of 26 as he beat the Steelheads for the second time in as many starts against the team.

Idaho was 0-4 on the power play, Colorado went 1-5.

The same two teams will battle again Friday and Saturday night in Boise. Tickets are available by calling the CenturyLink Arena box office (208.331.TIXS) or by logging on to www.idahosteelheads.com .
