Wheeling Nailers News Release
Winning Record in Warm Weather
The Wheeling Nailers have returned to the late autumn weather of the Ohio Valley, after spending last week in warm and sunny Estero, Florida, where they faced the Everblades three times over a four-day span. Wheeling came away from the trip with a positive end result, winning two of three games, taking 6-5 and 5-3 final scores on Wednesday and Friday, before dropping Saturday's finale, 5-2. The Nailers scored within the first four minutes of all three contests, including Brett Stern's tally at the 2:22 mark of Saturday's opening stanza. Riley Brace extended the lead for the visitors, before Florida rallied for five straight goals in the win. Franky Palazzese and Brian Foster each won once in the Sunshine State, while combining to make 117 saves over the course of the series.
Elmira Delivers a Couple of L's
The Reading Royals enter Wednesday night's tilt having suffered back-to-back defeats for the first time in 2015-16. The culprits were the same on both nights, as the Elmira Jackals swept Reading in a home-and-home series over the weekend. In Friday's game, the Royals had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, only to see Elmira score twice in 12 seconds to take a 3-2 lead after one period, in a game it eventually won, 5-4. Reading scored first of Saturday night as well, but once again, the Jackals rallied, lighting the lamp four times in a row during the middle frame, which also turned out to be a 5-4 final score. Riley Armstrong was one of the bright spots for the Royals, as he figured into seven of the team's eight goals, racking up one goal and six assists. Connor Knapp suffered both losses in goal.
A Rare Slip of the Lead
In the first 16 games of the regular season, teams who have taken the lead have typically had great success turning those leads into victories, especially when the advantage is more than one goal. However, that was not the case on Saturday night, as the Nailers built a 2-0 lead, only to see Florida answer with five consecutive markers for the comeback win. Saturday's game was just the second time this season (Nov. 6 vs. KAL) that Wheeling had lost a game when leading at any point, and it was the first time the Nailers fell when leading by two. Wheeling has come from behind to win on two occasions, as it rallied from three goals down on November 10th against Cincinnati, before responding to a 1-0 deficit in Florida on Friday.
Clark Gets the Call
Defenseman Clark Seymour received some exciting news this week, as he was recalled to the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Wednesday morning. Seymour had gotten off to a dynamic start to the season with the Nailers, piling up four goals, five assists, and nine points, ranking second on the team in defensive scoring, trailing rookie Brett Stern (3-7-10). Clark also posted a +6 rating, which is tied for third place on the club, in addition to accumulating 28 penalty minutes. The Brockville, Ontario native appeared in 12 games at the AHL level last season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, registering one assist and 13 penalty minutes. The Royals have had two players move up to the AHL since the Nailers last saw them, as defenseman Jesper Pettersson and goaltender Martin Ouellette are both with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Connor Knapp's new goaltending partner is Adam Morrison, a former draft pick of the Flyers, who went 15-5-2 with South Carolina a year ago.
Gobbling Them Up at Home
Wednesday night marks the third of 11 head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Royals, as well as the second of six battles scheduled to take place at WesBanco Arena. Wheeling and Reading split a home-and-home series two weeks ago, with the Royals scraping out a 2-1 win on Veteran's Day, before the Nailers bounced back with a 6-1 result two days later. Both teams won in their respective buildings, giving home teams a 13-1 record in the last 14 clashes between the long time rivals. Riley Brace notched his second career four-point game against Reading on the 13th, giving him 6-8-14 totals in ten games over the last two years. Patrick McGrath is two penalty minutes shy of 100 against the Royals, while Zack Torquato has faced Pennsylvania's lone active ECHL club 44 times. Wheeling's edge in home games is its first since January of 2011.
