ECHL Adirondack Thunder

Gameday: Adirondack vs. Elmira

November 25, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Adirondack Thunder News Release

TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: Tonight is the second meeting of the season between divisional rivals Adirondack and Elmira of a scheduled 11 meetings this season. Adirondack and Elmira last met in the first game in Thunder history on October 16, 2015 as Adirondack defeated the Jackals 4-1. The Thunder hit the ice for a game after a week-long break, after the team defeated the Norfolk Admirals 3-2 on November 18th. Adirondack currently holds a two-point lead over Manchester in the East Division standings with Elmira four points back in third.

LAST TIME OUT: The Thunder won in front of an intimate but energetic crowd last Wednesday as they defeated the Norfolk Admirals 3-2. Ken Appleby posted a 23-save effort for his eighth win of the season, while Mitchell Heard (1-1-2) and Mike Bergin (0-2-2) posted two points each to lead the offense.

HE'S NO BAD APPLE(BY): Ken Appleby now leads all ECHL rookie goaltenders with a 1.90 GAA. His .933 save percentage is also tops among rookie goaltenders and ranks him 5th overall in the ECHL. Appleby has only lost two of his ten starts and has been the lone wolf in net since Kent Simpson was recalled to Stockton in late October.

NOTHING STAYS CONSTANT: Defenseman Ryan Constant had his eight game point streak come to an end Wednesday morning, as he was unable to get on the scoring sheet in Adirondack's win over Norfolk. The streak was the longest of Constant's professional career, and left him tied for second for most points this season on the Thunder roster, tops amongst all blueliners.

LILO AND MITCH: Mitchell Heard continued to put his name on the scoring sheet, as he led the way for Adirondack with a two-point effort against Norfolk. With Rob Bordson now in the AHL, Heard has taken over as the Thunder's active leading scorer with five goals and six assists in 11 games played. Heard is also the Thunder's leader in penalty minutes with 38, added to by the 12 minutes he amassed in the win over the Admirals.

POWER OUTAGE: Despite just two losses in their last seven games, the Thunder have seen a dip in the effectiveness of their power play. Through the first five games of the season, Adirondack was six of 20 on the man advantage as they led the league in power-play percentage, but they have since dropped off to just 11.1% in the seven games since.

TENACIOUS D: Thanks to the recent play of Ken Appleby and a shut-down defensive core, the Thunder are on top of the ECHL for the fewest goals allowed. Adirondack is averaging only two goals allowed per game and have yet to allow more than two in any home game this season.  The Thunder's 24 goals allowed on the season as a whole are the fewest in the ECHL.
