The One That Slipped Away

The Wheeling Nailers got a brand new lease on life for Monday's game against the Greenville Road Warriors, as Greenville's 1-0 lead from Sunday was erased when the game got postponed due to ice problems. During the first period, it looked as though Wheeling was going to capitalize, as David Makowski and Jean-Sebastien Dea helped the home team build a 2-0 lead and a 15-8 advantage in shots on goal. With less than two minutes remaining in the second period, the Road Warriors began to swing the game into their favor, as Andrew Himelson connected for a power play goal. Himelson added another marker on the man advantage in the third, before Michael St. Croix put Greenville ahead for the first time. Despite 38 saves by Franky Palazzese, the Nailers were unable to overcome the deficit, ultimately falling, 4-2. Braely Torris had 31 saves for the Road Warriors.

Rough Goings on the Road Trip

The Elmira Jackals will play the final leg of a four-game road trip on Tuesday night, when they visit WesBanco Arena for the second time in five days. After Friday night's 3-2 shootout loss to the Nailers, Elmira traveled to Reading, where it suffered a 3-1 loss on Sunday and a 5-1 loss on Monday. In Sunday's game, Steven Shamanski gave the Jackals a 1-0 lead in the first period, only to see the Royals rally with three straight goals. Sean Wiles broke the 1-1 tie early in the third period. Then, on Monday, Reading controlled the contest from the start, busting out to a 15-2 advantage in shots on goal during the first period, while leading 2-0 on the scoreboard. Elmira cut the deficit to one, but the Royals once again stormed to the finish with three straight goals.

Leave it All Out There

When the final buzzer sounds on Tuesday night, the Nailers and Jackals will head to their respective dressing rooms, ready for a well deserved rest. Even though Sunday did not count as a played game, Tuesday will mark the fifth consecutive day in which Wheeling has taken the ice for game action. All four contests will have taken place at WesBanco Arena, where the team has posted a 1-1-1 record thus far, running its season mark to 16-9-1 at home. Elmira hasn't seen the State of New York since departing last Thursday, as it has gone 0-2-1 on the road, entering Tuesday's fourth tilt in five days. Following this game, the Nailers will be off until Saturday at Indy, while the Jackals will play their lone remaining game of the week on Friday against Toledo.

Trickle Down Helps Nailers

The NHL Trade Deadline came and went on Monday afternoon, and while none of the Nailers' affiliated players were sent to a new destination, Wheeling was impacted indirectly. The Pittsburgh Penguins made two trade, swapping out a defenseman for a defenseman in both deals. Meanwhile, the Montreal Canadiens added more depth to their roster, adding two forwards and one defenseman, while only sending one forward back the other way. With two extra players in the system, the Nailers received a pair of players from the Hamilton Bulldogs, as forward Shane Bakker and defenseman Bobby Shea were sent to Wheeling. Bakker is expected to be in Tuesday's lineup, in addition to defenseman Alex Boak, who was loaned to Wheeling on Monday from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

It's Like They Never Left

Tuesday night marks the seventh of 13 head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Jackals this season, as well as the fifth of seven battles between the two clubs at WesBanco Arena. After splitting the first two tilts, Wheeling has come away victorious in each of the last four clashes, as it has snatched a 5-1 lead in the season series. Four of the Nailers' five wins have come at home, where they have had tremendous success against Elmira, going 11-1-0 in the last 12 visits by their former division rivals. Wheeling's Derek Army leads all scorers with seven points in the six prior tilts, while he and Elmira's Mike Seidel have each lit the lamp five times.

Tuesday, March 3rd will be the make-up game for the postponed contest from February 16th against the Jackals. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05, and fans will be able to purchase a hot dog and soda combo for $5.

The Nailers next homestand will take place from March 13th-17th.

Friday the 13th will be a 7:35 face-off in a key North Divsion tilt against the Kalamazoo Wings. One lucky fan will leave with a new TV on Flat Screen Friday, while 2,000 fans will get a free player poster. That night will also be a Frosty Friday.

On Saturday the 14th, the Stanley Cup comes to WesBanco Arena, as Wheeling faces Elmira at 7:35. Three other NHL trophies will be on display on Memorabilia Night, which will also feature a trading card set giveaway and post game autograph session. The Pittsburgh Pirate Parrot will be at the game as well.

Tuesday the 17th is a 7:05 clash with the Toledo Walleye on St. Patrick's Day. Kids tickets will be $5.
