Nailers Sign Derek Army

WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have announced a transaction, which takes effect immediately. Wheeling has signed forward Derek Army to an ECHL contract.

Army, 22, joins the Nailers following his senior season at Providence College, where he majored in Marketing. While with the Friars, Derek appeared in 149 games, accumulating 38 goals, 38 assists, 76 points, and 146 penalty minutes. His most productive season came as a junior, when he set career highs with 13 goals and 23 points, helping Providence to an appearance in the Hockey East Semifinals. This past year, the Friars once again reached the Hockey East Semifinals, but also went two rounds deep in the National Tournament, opening with a win against Quinnipiac, before falling to Union. The North Kingstown, RI native is the oldest son of Colorado Avalanche Assistant Coach Tim Army.

Derek Army is expected to join the Nailers this weekend, as they conclude their regular season home schedule on Friday at 7:00 against Evansville, and again on Saturday night at 7:00 against Orlando. He will wear #19.
