February 13, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
WHEELING, WV- The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens, have received four players from their AHL affiliate, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Forwards Denver Manderson and Carter Rowney were loaned to Wheeling, while forward Zack Torquato and defenseman Barry Goers were each released from their 25-game professional tryouts in the AHL.
Torquato, 24, has been the Nailers' leading scorer for most of the 2013-14 season, until Sahir Gill recently took the lead away from him last week. Zack got off to a blazing start with Wheeling, racking up nine goals, 22 assists, and 31 points in 25 games, while also earning ECHL Player of the Week honors in late November. He was then signed to a professional tryout by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he picked up two goals, five assists, and seven points in 18 games. The Sault Ste. Marie, ON native has appeared in 228 games during his four-year pro career, totaling 44 goals, 106 assists, and 150 points.
Rowney, 23, also got off to a strong start offensively for Wheeling, as he currently ranks fifth on the team in scoring, despite suiting up in just 22 of the first 47 games. During that time, Carter accumulated seven goals, 13 assists, and 20 points, while also netting the Nailers' first hat trick of the season on November 8th in Fort Wayne. The rookie forward from Sexsmith, AB has also appeared in 16 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, where he has one goal, two assists, and three points.
Manderson, 24, appeared in two games last weekend with the Nailers, and is nearly a point-per-game player at the ECHL level, as he returns to Wheeling with four goals, nine assists, and 13 points in 14 contests. Of the four players in this release, Denver has spent the most time in the AHL this season, as he has registered one goal, six assists, and seven points in 25 games with the Penguins. The Fergus, ON native is nearing 100 games as a pro, as his resumé currently has 23 goals, 37 assists, and 60 points in 92 games.
Goers, 27, is the lone defenseman returning to Wheeling, after having played in 26 games between the two levels this season. In 18 games with the Nailers, Barry has recorded two goals, six assists, and eight points, giving him totals of three goals, ten assists, and 13 points overall. This is the Ivyland, PA native's fourth full season of professional hockey, as he has 16 goals, 62 assists, and 78 points in 188 games with six teams.
Between these four players, as well as forward Chaz Johnson, who is scheduled to return from his eight-game suspension on Saturday, the Nailers will add 91 points to their roster this week.
Torquato, Rowney, Manderson, and Goers are expected to join the Nailers in time for Friday night, as the team begins a stretch of three games in three days, with a 7:00 contest at home against the Reading Royals.
The Nailers' next game is scheduled for Friday, February 14th, when they will host the Reading Royals (ECHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals) at 7:00 p.m. at WesBanco Arena.
