LOVELAND, Colo. - The Colorado Eagles (24-14-5-3) fell short of the Utah Grizzlies (23-17-3-5) 3-2, in a shootout on Wednesday evening at the Budweiser Events Center. The Eagles late third-period rally saw Colorado score two goals in 46 seconds and helped them pick up one point in their first game back at home after a two-week road trip.
Grizzlies forward Jamie MacQueen found the back of the net first with a power-play goal from the circle to give Utah the 1-0 advantage 14:40 into the first frame.
Utah extended their lead over the Eagles, 2-0, as forward David Vallorani stuffed the puck home in the midst of commotion in front of Eagles netminder Adam Brown with less than four minutes left in the second period.
With less than two minutes left in the third period, Eagles forward Kyle Ostrow killed Utah's hopes for a shutout as he beat goalie Aaron Dell and cut the Grizzlies lead in half, 2-1. Colorado defenseman Daniel Johnston was not far behind to tie the game at 2 with :49 left in the third.
The two teams headed into a 4-on-4 sudden death overtime but with neither team finding the back of the net they headed into a shootout. Eagles forwards Kyle Kraemer, Trent Daavettila and Kevin Ulanski failed to net a puck against Dell while the Grizzlies secured their 3-2 victory with their first three shooters all scoring goals.
