Nailers Pin Down Jackals in Weekend Finale

February 8, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- Josh Archibald has been a Wheeling Nailer for only four games, but in that time, he has already started to leave his mark on the ECHL. The rookie forward has picked up at least one point in all four contests, including a two-point performance on Sunday afternoon, as the Nailers took down the Elmira Jackals, 3-1 at WesBanco Arena.

For the third game in a row, the Nailers notched the first goal of the contest, doing so during the opening period of play. David Gilbert picked the pocket of an Elmira defender, stripping the puck free, before carrying it around the back of the net. When Gilbert reached the right post, he slid a pass to the top of the crease, where Josh Archibald finished off the play for his second goal and fourth point in four games.

Wheeling stayed ahead until the 15:14 mark of the second period, when the Jackals came up with an equalizer. Thomas Nesbitt entered on the right side of the offensive zone with a pass for Ryan Rashid, who pumped a shot on goal from just inside of the blueline. Eric Hartzell made the blocker save, but the rebound fell into the slot, where it was smacked back in by Mike Seidel. With 1.7 seconds left in the frame, the Nailers regained their advantage, thanks to a shot from an incredibly sharp angle. Derek Army was the goal scorer for the home team, as his shot from just above the goal line deflected off of Sam Marotta's blocker, bouncing into the net. Riley Brace and Chaz Johnson recorded the helpers on Army's team-leading 19th of the campaign.

Defense ended up being the name of the game for Wheeling in the third period, as the Jackals only put one shot on the cage during the final frame of regulation. On the other end, Archibald added an insurance tally for the Nailers, flying through center ice, and whipping a shot into the left side of the net. The assists went to Zack Torquato and Paul Cianfrini, helping their squad to the 3-1 triumph.

Eric Hartzell earned his ninth straight win against the Jackals, making 19 saves on 20 shots for Wheeling. Sam Marotta took the loss for Elmira, tossing away 30 of the 33 shots he faced.
