WHEELING, WV - In the first of four head-to-head meetings between the two teams this season, the Indy Fuel fell to the Wheeling Nailers by a final score of 4-3 on Sunday at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling, West Virginia. With the loss, the Fuel fell to 2-5-2-1 overall this season and with seven points, remain alone in seventh place in the ECHL's North Division standings.
After a scoreless first period, the Nailers broke the ice on the power-play at 7:23 of the middle frame before Indy equalized at 12:27 when Dean Chelios notched an extra-man tally, the first goal of his professional career, to tie the score at 1-1 heading into the third period.
Wheeling's leading scorer, Riley Brace, claimed the Nailers' second lead of the game at 1:17 of the third, but leading Fuel scorer Robert Czarnik responded with a tying goal at 6:33. Wheeling made it 3-2 on Brace's second of the game on the power-play at 12:59, then Torquato's second score of the night nudged the Nailers' lead to its largest margin at 4-2 at 16:30. With the net empty for the Fuel, Patrick Cullen gave Indy hope at 17:24 with his fifth marker of the season, but Wheeling held on down the stretch for the victory in the first-ever meeting between the Fuel and Nailers.
Making his first appearance since Halloween, Cody Reichard was solid in net for the Fuel, stopping 23 of the 27 shots he faced while Franky Palazzese was terrific in net for the Nailers, earning the victory by virtue of a 35-save performance.
Next up for the Fuel, it's a Saturday rematch with the Nailers on "Military Appreciation Night" with the opening faceoff set for 7:35 pm at the Fairgrounds Coliseum. The Fuel will be wearing specialty military-themed jerseys on Saturday that will be auctioned off to fans following the game with a portion of the proceeds going to "Operation Hat Trick" to support America's wounded warriors. All ticket holders will receive a mini-American flag and all active-duty military members and veterans will receive a $5 concessions voucher and commemorative gift with paid admission. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, online at Ticketmaster.com and at the Fairgrounds Coliseum box office during regular business hours, Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
