Mallards Fall Short in Shootout
November 9, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
BRAMPTON, Ont. (November 7, 2014) - Mathew Maione converted the deciding penalty shot and Trevor Cann made 47 saves in regulation and overtime before stopping four Quad City Mallard penalty shots as the host Brampton Beast (1-5-1) edged the Mallards (4-3-1) 4-3 in a shootout Sunday. The Mallards earned one point for the shootout setback to move into a tie for first place in the ECHL's Central Division.
Maione pushed the Beast to the brink of victory in round six of the shootout after each team had scored twice- Justin Fox and Kevin Baker for the Mallards and Jason Pitton and Tyson Fawcett for Brampton- over five regulation rounds. Cann then made one final save on Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel to close out the Mallards.
The Mallards came from behind in the third period to force overtime and, as it proved, the shootout. Fox tied the score at three when his drive from the right point deflected in off a foe with 4:50 left in regulation. The Beast protected the lead deep into the third after Brayden Rose broke a 2-2 deadlock from the of the blue line just 23 seconds into the period.
The Beast had first moved in front with back-to-back second period goals from Mike MacIsaac and Tyler Donati. MacIsaac evened the contest at one with a wrist shot from the high slot at 5:17 of the second. A minute and 37 seconds later Donati scored from between the circles to put Brampton on top. That lead lasted only 87 seconds before the Mallards' tying goal caromed home off Evan Haney at the 8:21 mark.
The Mallards' Todd Fiddler opened the scoring by jamming a rebound in at 8:36 of the first period.
The Mallards and Beast meet again Friday night in Brampton. The Mallards next play at home Wednesday, November 19 at 7:05 p.m. against the Tulsa Oilers. Fans can purchase four tickets to any Mallards Wednesday home game for just $20. In addition, after each Wednesday home contest, fans can join the Mallards at T.G.I. Friday's on River Drive in Moline- adjacent to the iWireless Center- for a postgame party.
