Orlando, FL - Goaltender Jeff Malcolm stopped a season-high 45 shots and forward Kyle Jean notched his second consecutive multi-point game on Sunday as the Greenville Road Warriors (6-3-0-0) earned a 2-1 win over the Orlando Solar Bears (3-5-2-0) at the Amway Center.
The Road Warriors have now won six of their last seven games overall and are 2-2-0-0 against Orlando this season.
Following a scoreless first period, the Road Warriors and Solar Bears each traded lengthy 5-on-3 chances early in the middle frame, but the game remained knotted at 0-0. Greenville saw 1:18 of total time on a two-man advantage less than a minute into the second, while Orlando had a two-man advantage for two minutes at the 8:44 mark, but the goaltenders remained perfect.
At 17:43 of the middle frame, the Road Warriors opened the scoring with Josh Nicholls' first goal of the season. From the bottom of the right circle, Jean sent a crisp pass to Nicholls at the top of the crease, who punched the puck past Orlando goaltender Kent Patterson for a 1-0 advantage.
The Solar Bears evened the game at 9:30 of the third with a power play goal courtesy of Carson McMillian. With Jacob Johnston in the box for cross-checking, Eric Baier ripped a shot from the bottom of the left circle that was denied by Malcolm, but the rebound hopped directly to McMillian who finished from the back door.
Just 1:08 later, Jean sealed the deal with his team-leading sixth goal of the year. From the left side, Ryan Hegarty fed the puck to Jean in front, who tapped in the game-winner at the 10:38 mark.
The Road Warriors finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill. Patterson (1-4-2) made 22 saves and suffered the loss.
Orlando outshot Greenville 46-24, but fell for the seventh straight game.
The Road Warriors return to SANDLAPPER Securities Rink at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena tomorrow for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop against South Carolina.
