The Road Team is on the Board

Prior to Saturday night, the Nailers and Walleye had met twice this season, and on both occasions the road team not only failed to win, but also left with a zero on the scoreboard. Toledo stopped both of those trends at WesBanco Arena on Saturday, as Daniel Koger opened the scoring at the 5:27 mark of the first period, before leading the way in a three-goal second period attack, which saw the visitors build a 4-1 lead. Despite surrendering a pair of goals in the third period, the Walleye held on for a 5-3 win - its fourth road victory of the season.

Clinging to the Last Spot

The Wheeling Nailers, Fort Wayne Komets, Greenville Road Warriors, and Reading Royals are separated by just two points in the Eastern Conference Standings, with the teams seeded from seventh to tenth. There could be more shuffling happening on Sunday, as all four clubs are in action (WHL at TOL, FW vs. KAL, GRN vs. EVN, REA vs. ELM), although Wheeling is the only one out of the four, who won't be playing at home. The Nailers have had at least a share of a playoff spot since the end of play on November 15th, when they won their second of three games that week against the Elmira Jackals. Fort Wayne currently holds the higher points percentage, but Wheeling has the advantage in the season series (2-0).

Give Gill a Hand(ful)

With 5:45 remaining in the first period on Saturday, Sahir Gill blasted home a one-timer from the left face-off dot, tying the score at one. Gill's goal was his eighth of the season, as well as his 26th point. Later in the night, he earned an assist on Jack MacLellan's shorthanded marker, lifting him into a second place tie among rookie scorers in the ECHL. The goal and assist give Sahir a five-game point streak, which matches MacLellan for the second longest streak on the Nailers this season. Zack Torquato had a six-game point streak from November 15th-27th.

Six Straight on the Road

After playing 13 of their last 17 games at WesBanco Arena, the Nailers are set to embark on their longest road trip of the 2013-14 campaign. Wheeling will visit Toledo and Greenville twice, while mixing in one game each against Gwinnett and Cincinnati. Thus far this season, the Nailers have posted a 6-6-3 record on enemy ice, and will look to put an end to a four-game road winless skid on Sunday afternoon. Wheeling will also play six straight tilts away from home in February, which includes a set of four in a row against the Elmira Jackals. Prior to the last four games, the Nailers had earned points in eight of nine road games (6-1-2).

18 Wins For Each

Sunday afternoon marks the 37th all-time meeting between the Nailers and the Walleye, as both teams enter with 18 head-to-head wins. Toledo has had the historical advantage at Huntington Center, winning ten of the 15 games that have taken place on its home ice. The majority of those victories have come recently, as the Walleye won five of six home tilts last season, as well as seven of the last eight in that arena, dating back to the 2011-12 campaign. The Nailers' lone win in Toledo last season came in their final visit - a 3-2 triumph on St. Patrick's Day.
