Elmira Jackals News Release
READING, Pa. - January 12, 2014 - The Elmira Jackals were defeated for the third time in as many games by the Reading Royals this weekend in a 3-0 defeat at Santander Arena on Sunday. The loss dropped the Jackals' record to 10-19-4 on the season.
Elmira's defense and goaltending stole the show in the first period as the Royals were afforded a lengthy 5-on-3 power play to try to grab the early lead. Reading managed just two shots during the 1:18 two-man advantage thanks to some timely shot blocks from Jean Bourbeau and Troy Rutkowski. Starting goalie Scott Greenham turned away both shots that got through to the net and ensured the Royals' power play was kept off the board. Elmira managed six shots against Brandon Anderson in the first, after it finished killing the penalties, but the game headed into the second scoreless.
Royals defenseman Brett Flemming broke the scoreless draw early in the second by jumping up on a rush. Yannick Tifu left a drop pass in the high slot that Flemming skated into and carried below the hash marks. He then deked to the backhand and lifted a shot over Greenham's blocker for what turned out to be the winning goal. Sean Wiles added a 5-on-3 power play goal with two seconds left in the second period and Brandon Blandina chipped in his second of the year early in the third to provide Reading's insurance.
Elmira was afforded an opportunity to get on the board near the midpoint of the third with a 5-on-3 that lasted 1:16. The Jackals produced two good scoring opportunities on the advantage, including a shot by Troy Rutkowski that clanged off the crossbar, but the puck could not find the back of the net. Kyle Bushee also rang iron later in the period on a slap shot from the right wing, however Anderson was able to preserve his second shutout of the season.
Greenham took the loss with a 29-save effort for the Jackals. Elmira was 0-for-4 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
