Manchester Monarchs News Release
PROVIDENCE, RI - Goaltender Martin Jones stopped 32 shots to backstop the Manchester Monarchs to a 2-1 victory over the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Sunday evening.
Manchester (25-10-2-4) leads the Atlantic Division with 56 points. Providence (20-13-1-5) is ranked second in the Atlantic Division with 46 points.
"This afternoon was a nail biter right up until the final draw," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "Martin Jones was very solid for us. He always seems to make hard saves look routine. It was great to see Vinny LoVerde score such a big goal, because it seemed to ignite a spark for us. Up to that point, we seemed lackluster. Vinny has had some tough luck this season finding the net, even though he's had lots of looks at the net. His first was a game changer for sure. I poked fun of him in the pregame talk so I guess he wanted to show me something. Good for him.
"We finished the three-in-three on a good note. I'm hopeful we can carry some momentum and confidence into the St. John's series coming up next weekend out on the 'Rock'."
Right wing Zach O'Brien picked up the Monarchs go-ahead goal at 5:33 of the third period. Center Nick Shore fed a pass from the left wing face-off circle to right wing A.J. Gale in the slot. Gale blasted a one-timer that O'Brien redirected past Bruins netminder Niklas Svedberg for the game-winning goal.
The Bruins took a 1-0 lead at 15:09 of the opening period with defenseman Zach Trotman's third goal of the season. Left wing Craig Cunningham passed the puck from the left point to Trotman at the right point. Trotman skated toward the right face-off circle before snapping a wrist shot past Jones. Center Alexander Khokhlachev assisted on the Bruins lone goal of the game.
Defenseman Vincent LoVerde tied the game at 1-1 with his first goal of the season at 2:44 of the second period. Gale battled with a Bruins player along the left wing boards and fed a pass to Shore in the left wing face-off circle. Shore passed the puck over to LoVerde who was skating in from the right point. LoVerde fired a slap shot past Svedberg to tie the game.
Jones (11-2-2) earned his 11th win of the season making 32 saves on 33 shots. Svedberg (14-7-3) took his seventh loss of the season, stopping 19-of-21 shots.
Manchester was 0-for-5 on the power play. Providence went 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
