Pirates Wrap Busy Stretch in Sharks Territory
January 12, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Portland Pirates News Release
Worcester, MA - The Pirates will wrap one of the busiest stretches of the season on Sunday when they face the Worcester Sharks at the DCU Center in Worcester. Puck drop is set for 3 PM as the Pirates play their 6th game in 8 days, and look to extend their point streak to 3 games.
The Pirates defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers last night 2-0 behind Louis Domingue's first career AHL Shutout. Domingue made 31 saves for his 6th win of the season and the first Pirates shutout since February of 2013. It was also the Pirates' first shutout on the road since December 2012. Brett Hextall and Andy Miele provided the offense for the Pirates, with Miele's goal once again moving him up in the record books. Miele's 16 goal of the season tied him with Norm Batherson for 13th in career points with 139 and 15th in career goals (also with Batherson) with 51.
Worcester beat the Norfolk Admirals, the Pirates' Friday opponent, by a 5-1 score for their third straight home win. Yanni Gourde registered 3 points for the Sharks, including a goal, while Freddie Hamilton, Adam Comrie, Daniil Tarasov, and Dan DaSilva also scored. Troy Grosenick picked up the win with 24 saves.
The last time the Pirates and Sharks played was quiet memorable for Pirates fans, as Andy Miele registered his first professional hat trick and 5 points on the night to lead the Pirates to a 5-1 win on December 14th. Jordan Martinook and Rostislav Klesla also scored in the game, with Klesla's goal the first in his AHL career. Miele's performance led to him being named the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the week ending December 15th.
KeyBank Key to the Game
Veteran Presence: With injuries mounting and the end of a long stretch of games today, the Pirates will rely on their veteran and third year players to set the game's pace. Look for Andy Miele, Brett Hextall, Ethan Werek and Randy Jones to provide the leadership necessary to end the road trip on a high note.
This afternoon's game can be heard on the Pirates flagship stations WPEI 95.5/95.9 FM as well as WEZR AM 1240 in the Lewiston/Auburn area and WTME AM 780/1450 in Oxford County.
