Portland Pirates News Release
Worcester, MA - A shorthanded Pirates team was unable to overcome the Worcester Sharks on Sunday, dropping a 4-3 decision at the DCU Center. Brett Hextall extended his point streak to 7 games and Chris Brown added two points in the loss.
Due to injuries and illness, the Pirates were only able to dress 17 skaters (11 forwards, 6 defensemen) for the game. Worcester opened the scoring, with Lane Scheidl tallying his first professional goal at 5:18 of the first. Travis Oleksuk added a power play tally at 8:21 after a holding penalty on Brandon Gormley, and Worcester led 2-0. The Pirates got a goal back, as Mathieu Brodeur tallied his first goal of the season with 1:36 left in the period. Jordan Martinook and Brett Hextall added assists, with Hextall's assist giving him a 7 game point streak. Worcester outshot the Pirates 15-6 in the first.
Yanni Gourde extended the Sharks lead in the second, scoring a shorthanded tally with 16:03 left in the period to give Worcester a 3-1 lead. An injury to Sharks starter Troy Grosenick forced backup Harri Sateri into the game, but the Pirates only managed 7 shots on Sateri in the second, with no success.
The Pirates mounted a comeback in the third. Jordan Martinook tipped Randy Jones' shot past Sateri 3:36 into the third to bring the Pirates within 1. Chris Brown picked up the second assist. Taylor Doherty then capitalized on a 4 on 4 opportunity beating Visentin glove side at 8:11 to give Worcester the two goal advantage again. The Pirates got within one again after Brown tipped Daine Todd's shot past Sateri with 9:04 left to make it 4-3. Brandon Gormley picked up his 16th assist of the year, tying him with Andy Miele for the team lead in assists with 16. Sateri then stymied the Pirates for the rest of the period, making 11 saves total in the period, and preserved the win for the Sharks.
Mark Visentin drops to 9-12-3 on the year, making 38 saves in the loss, while the Pirates drop to 15-14-1-5 on the year. Worcester jumps the Pirates in 12th place in the Eastern Conference Standings, while the Pirates record on the road falls back to .500 at 9-9-1-1.
The Pirates return home to start a four game home stand on Friday to face the Springfield Falcons. Puck drop is 7 PM from the Androscoggin Bank Colisee. Tickets are available by calling the Androscoggin Bank Colisee box office at (207) 783-2009 ext. 525 or online at thecolisee.com.
