Murray Selected to 2014-15 AHL First All-Star Team
April 9, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, in conjunction with American Hockey League, have announced that goaltender Matt Murray has been named to the 2014-15 AHL First All-Star Team, as voted by coaches, players and media in each of the league's 30 member cities.
A third-round draft pick (83rd overall) by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2012 NHL Draft, Murray is 24-9-3 in 38 appearances for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season and ranks first in the league in goals-against average (1.50), save percentage (.943) and shutouts (12). His 12 shutouts are the most by a rookie goaltender in AHL history and one short of the record set by Jason LaBarbera (2003-04 - Hartford)
Murray has rewritten the AHL record books during his first-year of professional hockey. From Feb. 3 to Feb. 8, the 20-year-old backstopped the Penguins through a scoreless streak of 304 minutes and 11 seconds, breaking Barry Brust's mark during the 2012-13 season with Abbotsford Heat.
Murray has been named CCM/AHL Player of the Week twice and was CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month in both February and March. The native of Thunder Bay, Ont., is only the second player in league history to earn the honor in consecutive months (Philippe Sauve, Hershey - 2002).
Murray becomes the fifth Penguins player and third goaltender to be selected to the AHL First All-Star Team, joining John Slaney (2000-01), Dany Sabourin (2005-06), Micki DuPont (2006-07) and Brad Thiessen (2010-11). He also joins Niklas Svedberg (2012-13) as the only rookie goaltender in the last 20 years to earn First Team All-Star honors
