Murray Carries Johnstown To 5-1 Win Over Cyclones

CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Cyclones fired a season high 47 shots on goal Monday night at the Johnstown Chiefs, but goaltender John Murray was up to the challenge with a 46 save effort to direct the Pennsylvania visitors to a 5-1 win. Sean Berkstresser collected a goal and an assist for the Chiefs.

Johnstown scored the only goal of the first period as Bryan Marshall collected his 13th goal of the season at 18:09. David Schultz and Sean Berkstresser had the assists. Marshall picked up a rebound in the goal crease next to the left post and banged it in.

Cincinnati dominated play in the opening twenty minutes, registering a season-high 21 shots in the period. The Cyclones came out of the gates flying- notching eleven shots in the first 2:31 of play.

The Chiefs netted three second period goals to open up a 4-1 lead after two periods. Troy Schwab's tenth goal at 1:01 came from Jim McKenzie and Trevor Hendrikx. The Cyclones got their opening goal at 5:45 when rookie Matt Pierce fired his 22nd score of the season over the glove hand of netminder John Murray. Brett Robinson and Brian O'Hanley had the helpers. Chris Zarb's eighth goal of the season came via the power play at 16:52, as Dan Collins and Hendrikx had the assists. With nine-tenths of a second left in the frame- Sean Berkstresser shoveled in his eleventh tally as Jeff Martens and Zarb passed of the assists. The shots went the way of Johnstown in the period, 15-9.

The Chiefs registered the lone goal of the third period to collect the 5-1 win. Jonathan Ralph picked up his first lamplighter of the season at 14:59 from Schwab and Collins. Cincinnati again won the shots battle, 17-3, in the period and 47-24 for the game.

The Cyclones have a 25-8-4 record (.730 winning percentage) against Johnstown in the regular season under Head Coach Chuck Weber. Cincinnati has won ten of 13 against the Chiefs since December 8, 2008. During that time, Cincinnati has outscored Johnstown- 47-25.

Cincinnati is 25-16-1, while Johnstown is 10-22-8. The Cyclones play their next two games at home this week. Wednesday (Jan. 27), Charlotte becomes the first team from the South Division to stop by the Queen City on a 'Wet Wednesday' with one dollar Miller High Life and Pabst Blue Ribbon cans. Friday (Jan. 29), defending Kelly Cup champion South Carolina rolls into town for 'Willie Cunningham Bobblehead Night'. Both games have 7:30pm start times.

Despite the loss, Cincinnati remains tied for the North Division lead with Kalamazoo- although the Wings now have a game in hand on the Cyclones.
