Electrifying Jackals Return Home

January 25, 2010 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

The Elmira Jackals could not be returning to First Arena off of two more dominating performances, crushing the Toledo Walleye 7-2 and 8-2 to end the five-game road trip with a pair of decisive victories this past weekend. The Jackals host the Gwinnett Gladiators on Friday and Saturday at First Arena, and close out their 11th three-in-three of 2009-2010 with a game on Sunday against the Walleye.

JAZZY JACKALS OFFER ONE-TWO PUNCH

With their 15-goal weekend, the Jackals moved atop the ECHL in goals per game. Elmira averages 3.83 goals through 41 regular season games, and also leads the league in another thrilling category. The Jackals top the ECHL with 53 fighting penalties and have an overall total of 57 major infractions this season.

While the Jackals were busy scoring goals this weekend, with an average of one goal every eight minutes, the Jackals also engaged in seven action-packed fights. While the Jackals received a pair of tussles from Brett Gallant, who leads the league with 20 major penalties, Elmira saw Yannick Tifu and Keegan Dansereau, who had a combined 11 points on the weekend, earn five-for-fightings as well.

TWO BIG NIGHTS FROM DONATI

Jackals winger Tyler Donati moved to one point back of the team's scoring lead this weekend, posting three goals and five assists, including a goal and four assists in the win on Saturday. Donati's five-point game on Saturday was the third time this season he scored five points in a game. He is now up to 56 points in 2009-2010.

ELLIS SHUTS DOWN HIGH-OCTANE OFFENSE

While the Jackals decided each game with a barrage of early goals each night, goaltender Julien Ellis made sure the Walleye did not threaten the Jackals late. The Walleye came into the weekend leading the league in goals per game before being replaced in that spot by the Jackals. Ellis made 25 saves on 27 shots on Friday and stopped 29 of 31 pucks on Saturday, for a save percentage of.931 on the weekend, a goals-against average of 2.00, and an impeccable record of 2-0-0-0. With the Jackals this season, Ellis has a 7-3-0-0 record.

POWER PLAY PRODUCES

The Jackals power play scored five times in eight chances on Saturday night, becoming the first team to notch five man-advantage goals in two different games this season. Elmira also scored five power-play goals in a 7-4 win over Johnstown at First Arena on Oct. 23. The Jackals have power-play goals in eight of the last nine games.

ROBINSON REBOUNDS

Over the two games this weekend, Mat Robinson recorded a +7, bringing him to an overall +3 this season. This marks a significant turnaround for the rookie defenseman, who, at one point in December, had a -11. Since Dec. 26, however, Robinson is tied for the league lead with a +14, a stretch in which the Jackals are 8-5-0-0.

WINNING BIG

In 14 of the 20 Jackals victories this season, the Jackals have scored five goals and have not lost when scoring five or more goals in 2009-2010. Elmira has scored seven goals in a win five times this season, and eight or more goals twice. The Jackals have won eight games by three or more goals, and average 5.50 goals per game in their 20 wins this season. Elmira tops the American Conference with a goals for/goals against ratio of 1.22/1.

SEEKING REVENGE

Expect First Arena to be lively this weekend, with two teams coming to town looking to give the Jackals some payback. In their last game against the Gladiators on Nov. 14, the Jackals executed an 11-3 thrashing. Combining that with Elmira outscoring Toledo 15-4 over the two games this past weekend, the upcoming hat trick weekend of hockey at First Arena is guaranteed to be hard fought and spirited.
