Mudcats earn 6-3 victory over Smokies

Sevierville, TN --- Denis Phipps hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning to catapult the Carolina Mudcats to a 6-3 victory over the Tennessee Smokies at Smokies Park on Friday night.

Phipps hit his second home run of the series and the season against Rafael Dolis (L, 4-5) to send the Mudcats (4-5) to their first win in the six-game series thus far.

Tim Hamulack (W, 1-1) earned the win thanks to two perfect innings, while Travis Webb (S, 1) registered his first career save with two strikeouts in his inning.

Carolina established a 2-0 lead in the first when Neftali Soto hit his seventh home run in his last 13 games. Soto's 11th of the season occurred after a two-out double by Mike Costanzo.

The Smokies (5-4) evened the game in the bottom of the first against Kyle McCulloch. McCulloch's first pitch was hit for a homer by Brett Jackson, then Junior Lake tripled and scored on a grounder to tie the game at 2-2.

Steve Clevenger's sacrifice fly put Tennessee ahead in the sixth, however Yasmani Grandal hit a leadoff homer in the seventh against Dallas Beeler to tie the game again at 3-3.

Phipps and Soto extended their individual hitting streaks to 11 games, while Costanzo's stretched to 10.

The Mudcats continue their series against the Smokies on Saturday night at 6:15 PM ET. Pedro Villarreal (3-1, 4.88) starts against Chris Rusin (3-2, 4.24).
