Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (2-7, 39-40) dropped their second straight game to the Birmingham Barons (6-3, 46-33), as the Suns fell 4-1 in front of 5,321 fans at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Friday night.

Barons starter Terry Doyle (3-2) was dominant, pitching eight innings while only allowing one run on six hits to pick up the victory. Doyle didn't walk any batters and struck out six, and he also threw the last seven innings in scoreless fashion.

After Jacksonville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Kevin Mattison scored on a Doyle wild pitch, the Barons quickly took the Suns' momentum away in the second. Catcher Jared Price hit a three-run homer for the Barons to put Birmingham ahead 3-1 against Suns starter Joey O'Gara(4-6), a lead that would last the rest of the night.

The Barons also scored in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Kuhn to put the score at 4-1, which would be the final. The loss was O'Gara's fourth in his last five starts, as he gave up four runs (three earned) on six hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts.

Barons reliever Addison Reed earned his first Southern League save by pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Suns and Barons will play the fifth game of the six-game series on Saturday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The Suns will start left-hander Jose Alvarez (0-0, 0.00 ERA) against Birmingham's left-hander Justin Edwards (3-1, 4.03 ERA).

The Suns will wear special patriotic jerseys that will be auctioned off during and after the game to benefit the USO, and there will also be a fireworks show following the ballgame. Saturday's first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., and fans can listen to the game beginning at 6:50 p.m. with the U.F. & Shands Pregame Show on Jacksonville's WFXJ AM 930 the Fox and www.jaxsuns.com.
