Mud Hens Get in Trouble in Early Innings
August 9, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Toledo Mud Hens (47-68) fell 9-1 to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (64-52) Sunday evening at Fifth Third Field. After this loss, the Hens are currently 1-5 this season against the RailRiders. The Mud Hens currently sit in last place in the International League West Division.
Hens' starter Mike Belfiore lasted for two innings, allowing five hits and six runs but not after retiring two batters. Belfiore is currently tied on the Hens' roster for most strikeouts with 75. Right-handers Alberto Cabrera, Rafael Dolis and Jose Valdez provided relief on the mound sending nine Railriders' batters back to the bench. As a team, Toledo has a combined ERA of 4.76, placing them at 14th in the International League.
Toledo's Dixon Machado, who grounded out to third, bringing Daniel Fields home, produced the Hens' only run of the matchup. Fields reached base on a triple to center field, recording his eighth of the season. Fields currently is third in the International League in triples. Mike Hessman, the All-Time minor league career home run leader, had another multi-hit game. Hessman had his fourth multi-hit game in his past six starts. Hessman is also riding on a six game hit-streak after tonight's appearance.
Within the first two innings of the contest, the RailRiders posted six runs. Ben Gamel and Gary Sanchez both had multi-run at-bats. Gamel went 3-for-5, posting two RBI. Sanchez went 3-for-4 with three RBI.
With a lot of interesting sights in Sunday's game, Steven Moya was not one of them. Moya, a member of the Detroit Tigers 40-man roster, snapped his 75 game start streak tonight by not appearing in the lineup.
The Mud Hens will be back in action on Tuesday, August 11 against the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field in Indianapolis. The newly acquired Luis Cessa will make his second start in a Hens' uniform. Tuesday's contest is slated for 7:05 pm.
