Indianapolis Rallies to Top Tides

August 9, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Norfolk couldn't hold off a late Indianapolis rally as the Tides dropped a 5-4 contest to the Indians in front of 7,133 fans Sunday night at Harbor Park.

Norfolk led the contest 4-0 entering the seventh frame before the Tribe started their comeback bid on a solo home run by Josh Bell. One inning later, Indy knotted the score at 4-4 by plating three runs off of Cesar Cabral - a pitcher who had allowed just two earned runs while posting a 0.93 ERA over his first 20 relief appearances at Harbor Park this season.

The Indians then took the lead in the ninth inning, as Gustavo Nunez opened the frame with a double before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by Elias Diaz. The run came against Oliver Drake (1-2), who hadn't allowed a run over his last 26 games with the Tides - a streak that began on April 26.

Indianapolis completed their improbable victory in the ninth, as catcher Wilkin Castillo (1-0) worked around a two-out single to Rey Navarro to earn his first career pitching victory. Castillo, who entered with the score tied in the eighth and induced an inning-ending double play, was making just his second career appearance on the mound.

Rey Navarro and Dariel Alvarez each had two hits and a run scored for Norfolk, which was swept in the three-game set. Julio Borbon added a single, stolen base and run scored as he extended his hitting streak to seven games.

The Tides were forced to use six different relievers in the contest after scheduled starter Tyler Wilson was a late scratch. Wilson, who was set to make his first start with the Tides after being optioned from Baltimore Tuesday, injured his oblique while warming up for the game and will be further evaluated Monday.

The Tides continue their homestand Monday as they welcome the Durham Bulls to town for a two-game set. Chris Jones (6-6. 3.08) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by RHP Dylan Floro (9-11, 4.99), with first pitch slated for 7:05.

Monday is UVA Night at Harbor Park, as Joe Harris - former shooting guard for the Cavaliers and currently a Cleveland Cavalier - will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs on the concourse. The 2015 College World Series trophy - won by UVA when they defeated the University of Vanderbilt - will also be on display on the Harbor Park concourse.

Notes: Dana Eveland started the contest - the 15th different starting pitcher Norfolk has used this season...Rey Navarro doubled on the 16th pitch of an at-bat in the fifth inning for his 16th double of the season...Indy starter A.J. Morris had to leave the contest in the fourth inning after being struck on the foot by a line drive hit by Steve Clevenger...Jorge Rondon turned in three shutout innings of relief, his 10th consecutive scoreless appearance...The contest was Norfolk's fifth consecutive one-run game and 50th this season, most in Minor League Baseball.
