Birthday Boy Lail Earns First Triple-A Win
August 9, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
Toledo, Ohio - Backed by an explosive effort from his offense, right-hander Brady Lail celebrated his 22nd birthday with his first Triple-A win as his Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (New York Yankees) crushed the Toledo Mud Hens (Detroit Tigers) in a rain-shortened series finale on Sunday evening, 9-1. The RailRiders (64-52) recorded the SWB franchise's best record against the Mud Hens (47-68) as a Yankees affiliate at 5-1.
Greg Bird put the visitors ahead with a first-inning sac fly that scored Ben Gamel, who began the game with a double. In the second, all nine RailRiders came to the plate in a five-run frame. Gamel and Gary Sanchez each delivered two-run doubles while Jose Pirela singled in a run off starter Mike Belfiore (5-11). Belfiore was done after two innings. He allowed six runs on five hits and two walks as he tied Durham's Dylan Floro for the league lead in losses.
Toledo's lone run came in the third when Daniel Fields tripled and Dixon Machado's groundout to third base got him home. That was the lone run allowed by Lail (1-1) over six innings. He gave up four hits (three singles), walked a season-high-tying four and struck out four.
Bird singled Gamel and Rob Refsnyder home in the fourth while Sanchez doubled to drive Refsnyder across the plate in the seventh.
The later stage of play saw a driving rain pummel the playing surface before a delay without a tarp in the ninth. It came with Bird aboard at first base and two outs. The lake-like infield made the continuation of play impossible and the game was called after a 36-minute delay.
The RailRiders return home to PNC Field for a short four-game run against the Pawtucket Red Sox (Boston Red Sox) starting Monday night at 7:05 p.m. The pitching match-up for the opener has SWB right-hander Kyle Davies (8-6, 3.72) facing right-hander Matt Barnes (1-1, 4.50).
