Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves (61-53) were unable to scratch across any runs despite several opportunities against the International League's ERA leader and a pair of relievers in a 2-0 loss to the Buffalo Bisons (59-56) on Sunday at Coolray Field.
Right-hander Scott Copeland (W, 9-3) scattered eight Gwinnett hits in 7.0 innings to drop his league-leading ERA to 1.96 and end the G-Braves' 11-game winning streak over the Bisons that began on May 6, 2014.
Gwinnett is now 13-3 in its last 16 games and dropped temporarily to 2.0 games behind Columbus for the International League Wild Card spot. The Clippers host Lehigh Valley at 6:05 p.m. on Sunday night.
The G-Braves led off six separate innings with a hit. They also had runners in scoring position in four innings against Copeland, but he held them to 0-for-9 in those situations. Right-handed reliever Ben Rowen (H, 2) worked around a leadoff single for a scoreless eighth, and righty Joba Chamberlain (S, 2) set Gwinnett down in order in the ninth.
Gwinnett right-handed starter Sugar Ray Marimon (L, 3-4) was flawless through the first three innings, but he ran into trouble in the fourth with a walk, an error and two singles that gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead.
The Bisons got to Marimon again with one out in the seventh when they loaded the bases on two hits and a walk. Jonathan Diaz drew a bases-loaded walk to score Ty Kelly, who started the rally with a one-out double.
Right-hander Jason Hursh took over for Marimon with the bases still loaded and induced an inning-ending double play.
Marimon matched a season high with 6.1 innings and tied himself for the team lead in quality starts with his sixth of the year. He gave up both Buffalo runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out four in 95 pitches (59 strikes). Hursh retired every batter he faced in 1.2 innings of relief, and right-hander Vin Mazzaro delivered a scoreless ninth with a strikeout and one walk allowed.
Offensively for the G-Braves, Jordan Lennerton had his second multi-hit effort in 11 games with the G-Braves, going 2-for-3 with a walk, and Mallex Smith went 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot. Luis Mateo notched Gwinnett's lone extra-base hit of the day, a leadoff double in the third inning for his only hit in a 1-for-3 effort.
Kelly finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for Buffalo, and Matt Hague went 2-for-4 to raise his IL-leading batting average to .349.
Gwinnett will embark on their longest remaining road trip of the season with the first of four games against the Charlotte Knights, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, at 7:05 p.m. on Monday at BB&T Ballpark. The G-Braves will send right-hander Kanekoa Texeira (4-3, 3.53 ERA) to the mound for the start vs. right-hander Kyle Drabek (6-6, 2.74 ERA) of Charlotte. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The G-Braves will return to Coolray Field on Thursday, August 20 for the 6:35 p.m. opener of a four-game series against the Louisville Bats, the Triple-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds. It will be a "Coolray Triple Play" night when fans can purchase a four-pack of tickets with four hot dogs and four soft drinks for $40 presented by Coolray Heating and Cooling. The offer is available only at the Coolray Field Ticket Office. To purchase tickets, call the Coolray Field Ticket Office at 678-277-0340 or visit GwinnettBraves.com/tickets.
