Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Hens returned home to Fifth Third Field on Monday to face the Louisville Bats, falling 13-4 with Louisville tallying six runs in the ninth inning to clinch the win.
Louisville would utilize a five-run third inning and a six-run ninth inning to propel them to a 13-4 victory over Toledo. A grand slam by Chadwick Tromp in the third would be the inital difference maker, pushing the Bats to the win on Monday.
The Bats opened the top of the first inning with a single from Narciso Crook up the middle. Crook would then steal second base and advance to third on a throwing error on the steal. A groundball off the bat of Christian Colon would score Crook to give Louisville an early lead. Brian O'Grady would then knock a single to right field. After a flyout, O'Grady would steal second, his 14th stolen base of the year. A walk to Alex Blandino would put runners at first and second with two outs before a strikeout would end the top of the first with the Bats leading 1-0.
Jacob Robson would get the Hens going in the bottom of the first with a single through the infield to beat the shift, but Robson would be caught stealing second as he slid past the bag.
With two outs in the top of the second, Blake Trahan sent a shot off of the left field foul pole for his fourth home run of the season to extend the Bats' lead to 2-0.
The next action would come in the top of the third with O'Grady logging a bloop single to left field. O'Grady would move up to second on a Aristides Aquino single, putting two on with one out. Another single, this one by Blandino, would load the bases for Louisville. O'Grady would score on a single by Scott Schebler, keeping the bases loaded while increasing the lead. Tromp would then unleash his fifth home run of the season to center field for a grand slam, bringing the score to 7-0 Louisville.
Toledo would reach the bases again in the bottom of the third with Pete Kozma leading off with a single up the middle. Kade Scivicque would reach first as well, but at the cost of a fielder's choice with Kozma being thrown out at second. Danny Woodrow would draw a walk to put two on for Toledo with one out. Robson would single up the middle to score Scivicque before stealing second, his 22nd of the year, to put runners at second and third with two outs and the score at 7-1, but a pop up would end the inning.
Zac Reininger would enter in the fourth on the mound for Toledo. Starter Matt Hall went three innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out five.
To begin the fourth, Crook doubled to the left-center gap, just beating the throw in from the outfield. After a groundout, O'Grady would reach on a walk. A groundball would move Crook to third with O'Grady out at second and Aquino safe at first. A walk to Blandino would load the bases for Louisville with two outs, but a fly out would end the inning.
Dawel Lugo would lead off the bottom of the fourth for the Mud Hens with an infield single. An out was recorded before Willi Castro singled to put runners at first and second for Toledo, but a groundball would end the inning.
In the fifth, Mitch Nay opened with a double to the left field corner for the Bats. Tromp would then draw a walk to put two on, but the Mud Hens would get three straight outs to end the top of the fifth.
Woodrow would extend his hitting streak to 15 games with a single to open the bottom half of the fifth. Woodrow would advance to third on a fielding error on a groundball by Robson. A soft line out by Dustin Peterson would result in a double play, but Woodrow would score prior to the unconventional second out, moving the score to 7-2.
John Schreiber would come on for Toledo in the top of the sixth to pitch. Over two innings, Reininger would allow two hits and three walks while striking out one and not allowing a run.
After a groundout, Aquino would reach for Louisville on a single through the left side of the infield. A pop up and a diving catch by Daz Cameron would end the top half of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth with one out, Ronny Rodriguez sent a ball to left-center for his sixth home run of the season with the Mud Hens, coming closer to Louisville with the score at 7-3.
Scivicque would join in, hitting a home run in the bottom of the seventh, ringing off the Chick-fil-A "Fowl" pole in left field to cut the lead to 7-4. Cameron would then single to center field after a fly out.
Joe Mantiply would then replace starting pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez for Louisville. Over 6.1 innings, Gutierrez allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits and one walk while striking out three. With Mantiply on the mound, Cameron would move up to second on a walk by Robson followed by a strikeout and a fly out to end the inning.
Caleb Thielbar would enter for Toledo in the eighth inning. Schreiber totaled two strikeouts over two innings while allowing one hit. Crook would reach on a walk in Thielbar's first batter faced. A fly out would be recorded before O'Grady would draw another walk to put runners at first and second, but a strikeout and fly out would end the half of the inning.
Mantiply would be pulled before the start of the bottom of the eighth for the Bats with Alex Powers entering on the bump. Mantiply tossed 0.2 innings, walking one and striking out one.
Rodriguez welcomed Powers by drawing a walk to quickly give Toledo a base runner. Castro would then single to right field, moving Rodriguez up to second. Kozma would then provide a single to load the bases for the Mud Hens. A fly ball from Scivicque to right field would be caught with Aquino throwing out Rodriguez trying for home, putting runners at the corners with two outs and the score still at 7-4 before a groundout would end the inning.
Austin Adams would enter for Toledo in the top of the ninth replacing Thielbar, who struck out one while walking two in the eighth.
After a groundout to begin the inning, Nay doubled to the left field corner. Tromp would then reach on a hit by pitch to put runners at first and second. Trahan would then reach on a single but a throwing error would move Trahan to second, Tromp to third and Nay scoring to increase the lead. Crook would double down the left field line to score Tromp and Trahan. Another double, this time off the bat of Colon, would score Crook. O'Grady would then reach on a fielding error with Colon. A single by Aquino would move O'Grady to second before a walk to Blandino would load the bases. A fly ball to deep left-center by Schebler would allow O'Grady to score with Aquino moving to third before a groundball would end the inning with Louisville leading 13-4.
Joel Kuhnel would take the mound for the Bats in the ninth replacing Powers who allowed two hits and one walk in his inning of work. Kuhnel would send the Hens down in order with one strikeout.
