International League Players of the Week Named

Published on July 29, 2019 under International League (IL1) News Release

The International League announced today that Pawtucket infielder/outfielder Chris Owings and Rochester right-handed starter Randy Dobnak have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period covering July 22-28. Owings is the third member of the PawSox to claim an IL weekly award this season, following Kyle Hart (May 27-June 2) and Rusney Castillo (June 10-16), while Dobnak is the fourth Red Wings player to be so honored in 2019, joining Lewis Thorpe (April 22-28), Sean Poppen (June 3-9), and Jaylin Davis (July 1-7).

CHRIS OWINGS, Pawtucket Red Sox IL BATTER OF THE WEEK Over the past week, Chris Owings hit .400 and led the International League with four home runs and 14 RBI for the red hot Red Sox, winners of six of their last seven games. After closing the previous week with a home run in two straight games, Owings kept right on slugging this week, ultimately putting together a franchise record of six consecutive games with a home run. While he didn't crush any more long balls over the weekend, he collected four more hits Saturday and Sunday to improve his active hitting streak to eleven games. Since joining Pawtucket in mid-June, Owings is hitting .333 overall with nine homers and 29 RBI.

27-year-old Chris Owings is in his eleventh season playing professionally. The former Pacific Coast League MVP played 580 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2013-18, then signed with Kansas City as a free agent last offseason. After 40 games with the Royals he was released and signed with Boston in June. Owings is a native of Charleston, South Carolina.

RANDY DOBNAK, Rochester Red Wings IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK Rochester's Randy Dobnak was the circuit's only hurler to win two games over the past week, putting together consecutive quality starts against Norfolk and Indianapolis at Frontier Field and totaling a League-high 12.1 innings pitched. On Tuesday he was masterful over 6.0 scoreless innings of work, scattering four hits and two walks while striking out six Tides as the Red Wings rolled to an eventual 16-3 triumph. Sunday's outing initially looked like a carbon-copy of that effort. Dobnak delivered 6.0 scoreless innings before finally being roughed up in the 7th for a couple tallies. Rochester held on to win 6-5, giving Dobnak his third win as a Triple-A pitcher.

24-year-old Randy Dobnak is in his third season pitching professionally. He was not drafted after graduating from Alderson Broaddus College, but after time in independent baseball he was signed by the Twins in August of 2017. He had not pitched higher than the Class-A level prior to the 2019 season. Dobnak is a native of South Park, Pennsylvania.
