YESTERDAY: The Indians made a late rally attempt Sunday afternoon in Rochester but came up short in a 6-5 loss, giving the Red Wings the series win. The Tribe were being no-hit by Rochester starter Randy Dobnak until the sixth inning, when a Steven Baron infield single broke up the bid. Indy didn't score off Dobnak until the seventh and used a two-run homer by Ke'Bryan Hayes in the eighth to pull within one run at 5-4. The Red Wings added a crucial insurance run in the home half against Jake Brentz to extend their lead to 6-4. Pablo Reyes opened the ninth with a solo shot, his 10th of the year, but Cole Tucker struck out with the tying and go-ahead runs on base to end the game. Brandon Waddell (L, 1-3) gave up five runs in six innings of work, fanning six and walking just two. Three of the four hits he allowed were home runs -- one apiece by Ronald Torreyes, Wilin Rosario and Jake Cave.

FAVORABLE SCHEDULE: Indy has 35 games remaining in the regular season and trail Columbus and Durham both by 7.0 games in the IL West and IL Wild Card races. The Indians inched with 7.0 games of Columbus on July 24 but have remained there over the last four days. Only 10 of the Tribe's last 35 games are against teams over .500 -- seven at home vs. Columbus (60-45) and three at Durham (61-46). The combined records of Indy's five remaining sub-.500 opponents (10 vs. TOL, 3 vs. NOR, 3 vs. ROC, 4 vs. LHV, 5 vs. LOU) is 234-294 (.443).

ROTATION RETURN: LHP Brandon Waddell made his return to Indy's rotation yesterday for the first time since the 2018 campaign; he pitched exclusively in relief for the Tribe to begin the season and went 1-2 with an 8.70 ERA (29er/30.0), 2.10 WHIP and 37 strikeouts against 25 walks. He was demoted to Altoona, where he had much better results (3-1, 2.23 ERA, 42 K's, 9 BB's in 36.1ip). Waddell held the Red Wings to four hits in six innings, but three of the four knocks left the yard. The three homers he surrendered marked a new career high and was just the fifth time he's given up multiple long balls in 108 career appearances (79 starts).

PABLO POWER: Pablo Reyes clubbed his 10th home run of the season yesterday, giving him double-digit homers for a fourth time in his career (12 in 2015, 10 in 2017, 11 in 2018). The Indians are just 5-4 in games where Reyes homers this year, however. They also fell to 6-7 in games where the utilityman has two-plus hits. Reyes is second on the team in home runs behind Will Craig (19).

POST-BREAK PABLO: Pablo Reyes has hit .333 (17-for-51) with five homers, two doubles and 11 RBI in 14 games since the All-Star break. Over the course of his career, Reyes has put up better numbers in the second half than the first; he's a lifetime .294 hitter with an .843 OPS after the break and just a .262 hitter with a .712 OPS prior to the break.

YOUNG HAYES: Ke'Bryan Hayes belted his seventh home run of the season yesterday to match his career high set in 2018 with Altoona. The Indians were 6-0 in games where Pittsburgh's top prospect homered prior to the defeat on Sunday. Hayes now has 22 career home runs. The 22-year-old hit .245 with four home runs and 31 RBI in the first half. Since the All-Star break, he's hitting .290 with three long balls and seven ribbies.

THE NEW GUY: RHP Parker Markel has joined the Tribe roster ahead of tonight's series opener. Markel, 28, was claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh from Seattle on July 27. He went 2-0 with a 2.60 ERA and eight saves in 22 appearances with Triple-A Tacoma and also made his major league debut this year with the Mariners, where he posted a 15.43 ERA (8er/4.2ip) in five outings. Markel was originally selected by the Rays in the 39th round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Yavapai College. He last pitched in the International League in 2015 and 2016 with Durham, compiling a 5-3 record and 2.78 ERA in 39 games (one start) for the Bulls.
