Trenton Thunder News Release
(Binghamton, NY) - Trenton scored three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to break open a pitcher's duel as the Thunder topped the Binghamton Mets, 7-1, Wednesday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium to finish a sweep in the three-game series. Vidal Nuño (5-2) tossed six strong innings for Trenton (57-39), which went 6-1 on the seven-game road trip.
The Thunder led 2-1 in the seventh inning and Binghamton had retired 14 consecutive Trenton batters before Melky Mesa began the three-run rally with a double against reliever Jeff Stevens. Luke Murton then doubled to deep center on a 3-0 pitch to score Mesa and increase the lead to 3-1.
After Kevin Mahoney walked, Jose Gil drilled his second RBI double of the game to increase the lead to three and chase Stevens. Neil Medchill greeted Adrian Rosario with an RBI single to complete the rally. Mahoney would add an RBI hit in the eighth against Rosario during a two-run inning.
Nuño allowed six hits and one run (earned) while striking out five. Craig Heyer tossed two scoreless innings in relief while Francisco Rondon finished the win with by recording two strikeouts in the ninth.
Gil's first RBI double came in the second inning against Mets starter Cory Mazzoni (3-3) to put the Thunder in front 2-0. He collected two of Trenton's nine hits. Nuño allowed a run on a double-play ground out in the second, but escaped further damage when Juan Lagares flew out with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Trenton next heads home to begin a four-game series against the Reading Philliies. Game one will be Thursday night at 7:05 pm, with left-hander Shaeffer Hall (7-6, 3.63) expected to start for Trenton against lefty Mario Hollands (7-6, 6.43).
