Moquete Lifts Delmarva to Series Victory, 4-3
May 4, 2015 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds pulled off another dramatic ninth inning rally, eventually winning in extras, 4-3 on Monday night. With the comeback victory, the Shorebirds (15-9) earned a series victory in Augusta, finishing their Southern Division road trip with an impressive 5-2 mark.
Both starters, Sebastian Vader of Delmarva and Jose Reyes for Augusta, dominated early. Augusta manufactured a run in the first inning with just one hit. Seth Harrison singled up the middle, and then advanced on a stolen base and passed ball. Aramis Garcia brought Harrison home on a fielder's choice to third base, giving Augusta a 1-0 lead.
The Shorebirds steadily chipped away at the GreenJackets' starter until breaking through in the fifth. Riley Palmer lined a triple down the left field line. Elier Leyva rocked a two-out double, splitting the left-center gap and bringing home Palmer for a 1-1 tie.
Augusta broke the deadlock in the seventh inning off Vader. Garcia led off the frame with a single, and Augusta pushed him over with a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Will Callaway delivered a go-ahead single to center for a 2-1 GreenJackets advantage. Arenado added another RBI single in the eighth inning off Mike Burke, making his Shorebirds' debut in relief.
Trailing by two runs headed to the ninth, Jamill Moquete came up huge in another clutch situation. Moquete crushed a game-tying two-run home run, extending the game for Delmarva. It was the second time Moquete homered to tie a game in the ninth, doing the same at Hagerstown on April 22nd.
In extras, Moquete played a crucial role again. Jared Breen and Alex Murphy started the inning with consecutive singles. After a wild pitch and strikeout, Augusta intentionally walked Jomar Reyes to load the bases. Moquete drew another free pass from Reyes Moronta to force in the go-ahead run.
Donnie Hart locked up the save in the tenth inning, his league-high seventh of the season. Dariel Delgado gets credit for his third win, a team-high. Reyes Moronta settles for the loss for the Augusta GreenJackets.
Delmarva returns home for a seven-game homestand starting on Wednesday night against the Asheville Tourists. Left-hander John Means (2-0, 2.57) will start the series opener against Tourists' righty Ryan Castellani (0-2, 5.93). First pitch is scheduled is for 7:05 pm at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md.
