Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
Savannah, GA - JC Rodriguez provided the pop to help the Savannah Sand Gnats snap a four-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the Lakewood BlueClaws Monday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. The Gnats finished their seven-game homestead against Delmarva and Lakewood at 2-5.
Rodriguez put the Gnats (8-16) ahead to stay in a three-run fifth inning. With a run home and two outs and the bases empty, and the Gnats down 3-1, DH John Mora drew a walk to restart the rally. Rodriguez followed by blasting a two-run homer over the right field wall for his first homer of 2015 and a 4-3 Savannah lead.
Rodriguez helped the Gnats tack on two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. After Mora walked again, Rodriguez tripled up the right-centerfield gap to score Mora and put the Gnats up 5-3. Rodriguez scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Stefan Sabol to complete the game's scoring.
Lakewood (13-12) scored single runs in the first, second and third innings to take a 3-0 lead. However, Gnats starter Scarlyn Reyes steadied himself and kept the 'Claws off the board in the fourth and fifth before departing with two outs in the sixth. He earned his first win of the year for his 5.2 innings of work.
The Gnats bullpen of Jimmy Duff, Josh Smoker and David Roseboom combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Roseboom has not allowed a run in his last six appearances and has thrown 11.1 consecutive innings without allowing a man to score. Duff has now tossed 10.1 consecutive innings over his last six outings without allowing a run, which started on April 17th.
Rightfielder Wuilmer Becerra extended his season-high six game hitting streak with an RBI double in the fourth inning.
The Sand Gnats will be off tomorrow and travel to Greenville to take on the Drive on Wednesday. RHP Corey Oswalt (2-0, 4.84) is set to start for the Gnats, while RHP Jeffry Fernandez (0-3, 4.91) will start for Greenville in the series opener. The Sand Gnats will return home on Thursday, May 14th for another seven-game homestand against the Lexington Legends and the Augusta GreenJackets.
