Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 4, 2015) - The Rome Braves scored five runs over the final two innings, including four in the ninth, to steal a comeback win over the Kannapolis Intimidators, 10-7, on Monday night at CMC-NorthEast Stadium. Kannapolis shortstop Eddy Alvarez finished a home run shy of a natural cycle, going 3-for-3 while reaching base safely in all five of his plate appearances.
Intimidators starting pitcher Jordan Guerrero tossed 7.0 innings but took no decision, giving up five runs on 12 hits while striking out six and walking one. The Braves scored five runs over two innings against the Kannapolis bullpen, overcoming a late 7-5 deficit for a series-clinching win.
In the eighth, Ozzie Albies connected on a 2-out double to score Joseph Daris, pulling the Braves within one. Jacob Morris took the mound in the ninth and walked the leadoff man. Two batters later, Tanner Krietemeier tied the game with a triple and gave Rome its first lead by scoring on a wild pitch. Morris walked two more batters and gave up a 2-run base hit to Daris, giving the Braves a 10-7 edge.
Daris finished the night 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Krietemeier and Keith Curcio enjoyed 3-hit nights for Rome, which pounded out 16 hits - matching the most allowed by the Intimidators this season.
Morris (1-2) took the loss, working two-thirds of an inning. Caleb Dirks (1-2) tossed the final 2 and 1/3 innings for the Braves, earning a relief win.
With the game tied 5-5, Alvarez drove a 2-out triple to right-center field, scoring James Baldwin to reclaim the lead. Alvarez finished 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, a walk and a hit-by-pitch in his five plate appearances.
The Intimidators scored three runs in the first thanks to a Chris Curley RBI-single and a Louie Lechich 2-run double. After the Braves pulled within a run, 3-2, with two runs in the third inning, Kannapolis pulled away with two runs in the home half of the fourth. Baldwin and Alvarez strung together back-to-back doubles in the frame for a 5-2 lead.
Rome evened the game in the top of the fifth with a 3-run frame. The Braves strung together five 1-out hits, including a 2-run double by Jordan Edgerton in the inning.
The Intimidators are off on Tuesday before opening a 7-game road trip to West Virginia and Lexington on Wednesday. The Intimidators return home for a 4-game series in Kannapolis May 14-17 against the Lakewood BlueClaws.
