Lexington Legends News Release
Elier Hernandez' leadoff home run in the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie, and the Lexington Legends didn't let up after that, adding two more runs in the eighth and six in the ninth for an 11-2 win over the Asheville Tourists Monday in Asheville. Humberto Arteaga had four hits in five at bats, and Ryan O'Hearn and Luis Villegas also homered for the Legends, who won the last three games of the four-game series.
The Legends tied their season high of 16 hits, which they had set in Saturday's 12-3 victory. After getting only two ninth-inning hits in the series opener, a 4-1 Asheville victory Friday night, the Legends pounded out 47 hits in the last three games of the series.
Lexington opened the scoring with a run in the second inning when Brandon Downes, who was on at second base, stole third and came home on a throwing error by catcher Dom Nunez. Asheville evened the score in the bottom of the second on three straight singles after the first two hitters were retired.
O'Hearn's solo homer in the third put the Legends in front 2-1, but the Tourists came back to tie it in the bottom of the third on a double by Wes Rogers, a sacrifice bunt by Forrest Wall, and a single by Drew Weeks.
The score remained 2-2 until Hernandez' leadoff homer in the eighth. After the homer, with one out, Wander Franco drew a walk and came around to score on a double by Arteaga. Arteaga advanced to third on Downes' fly ball to right field and scored on a wild pitch by Asheville reliever Gavin Glanz, giving the Legends a 5-2 lead.
Corey Toups led off the top of the ninth with a double. He scored as O'Hearn reached first on an error by Wall at second base. After Hernandez flied out, Alfredo Escalera singled to left, but Weeks threw out O'Hearn at third. Franco followed with an infield single, scoring Escalera, and Franco continued to second on a throwing error by Fuentes. Arteaga's single scored Franco, and the Legends led 8-2. Arteaga scored on a base hit by Downes, and Villegas' two-run homer capped the scoring.
Emilio Ogando (1-1) got the win in relief for Lexington. He pitched three scoreless innings and allowed two hits and no runs. Nik Stephenson worked the first six innings and allowed six hits and two runs.
Glanz (0-1) took the loss for Asheville.
Downes had seven hits in 16 at bats in the four-game series, including three home runs. He drove in seven runs. O'Hearn was 8-for-16 with one homer and three runs batted in.
The Legends will begin a seven-game homestand Wednesday night with the opener of a three-game series against the Charleston RiverDogs, who are in first place in the South Atlantic League Southern Division, five and one-half games ahead of the Legends, who are tied for fifth place. Game time Wednesday is 7:05 p.m.
